Chapter 12 - A Dance with the Puppet Master

I ascended the curved marble staircase leading to the VIP mezzanine,

my movements smooth,

confident,

and completely unbothered by the stares of onlookers.

Two armored private security guards stood at the entrance of the private lounge,

their hands crossed rigidly in front of their suits.

As I approached,

one guard stepped forward to block my path,

raising his hand.

"This area is restricted to VIP guests,

ma'am,"

the guard stated firmly.

Before he could finish his sentence,

Julian Mercer turned his head,

his sharp eyes locking onto my face.

A subtle,

amused smile spread slowly across his lips,

and he waved his hand dismissively to his guards.

"Let her pass,"

Mercer instructed,

his voice smooth,

deep,

and dripping with arrogant composure.

"It is not every day that the famous Captain Claire Cross honors us with her presence."

The guards stepped back immediately,

opening the passage.

Deputy Secretary Harrington glanced up in surprise,

adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as I stepped into the carpeted lounge.

"Captain Cross?"

Harrington gasped softly,

recognizing my face from the recent national news broadcasts.

"I thought you were tied up in court proceedings regarding your family's estate."

"The court proceedings have concluded,

Mr. Secretary,"

I replied smoothly,

stopping three feet away from Mercer's table.

"My brother is currently in federal handcuffs,

and my military records have been fully authenticated by the Pentagon."

Harrington looked visibly uncomfortable,

shifting in his seat,

while Mercer simply took a slow sip of his scotch.

"A remarkable performance in court today,

Captain,"

Mercer remarked,

his tone patronizing and calm.

"You proved your bravery once again.

However,

running a military campaign in the desert is quite different from surviving the complex currents of national security politics."

"Is that what you call treason,

Mr. Mercer?"

I asked,

my voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that only the three of us could hear.

"Complex currents?"

Harrington's face flushed red,

and he slammed his glass onto the glass table.

"Mind your tongue,

Captain!"

Harrington snapped angrily.

"You are speaking to a major defense advisor and a senior executive official!

I suggest you show proper respect!"

"Respect must be earned,

Mr. Secretary,"

I countered coldly,

staring directly into Harrington's eyes.

"Does your office know that Mr. Mercer financed the illegal wire transfers out of Cross Meridian Systems?

Or that he deployed a chemical neurotoxin team to Facility Seven less than an hour ago?"

Harrington froze,

his eyes widening in sudden,

unfiltered panic as he looked over at Mercer.

Mercer did not flinch,

nor did his calm expression change in the slightest degree.

"Facility Seven was an unfortunate industrial accident,

Claire,"

Mercer said softly,

leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees.

"And Dr. Thorne was always an unstable employee.

Whatever stories he told you hold no weight in a court of law without physical proof."

"Dr. Thorne did not drop the vial,

Julian,"

I revealed,

watching his eyes closely for any sign of weakness.

"We secured the chemical agent,

we neutralized your strike team,

and Dr. Thorne's daughter is currently under the protection of United States Special Forces."

For the very first time,

Mercer's confident smile faltered,

May you like

a shadow of dark,

calculating fury flickering across his features.
