Chapter 11 - The High-Society Infiltration

The rain had finally subsided,
leaving the city streets wet and glistening under the bright neon lights.
The Capital Grand Hotel stood tall and imposing against the dark skyline,
its illuminated glass facade radiating wealth,
power,
and political influence.
Dozens of sleek black limousines lined the velvet-roped entrance,
discharging high-ranking military officials,
wealthy defense contractors,
and foreign dignitaries in formal evening attire.
Inside a black SUV parked two blocks away from the hotel,
I adjusted the hem of my midnight-blue silk evening gown.
The fabric was heavy and elegant,
designed specifically to conceal the shoulder holster holding my silenced compact sidearm.
Beside me,
Major Ethan Walker fastened his silk bow tie,
his sharp jawline and tailored tuxedo giving him the appearance of a high-society elite rather than a hardened tactical operative.
"General Vance confirmed that Delta Team successfully extracted Dr. Thorne's daughter ten minutes ago,"
Ethan said quietly,
his eyes scanning the digital security layout of the hotel displayed on his tablet screen.
"She is safe in a secure military holding facility,"
he added,
looking up at me with quiet intensity.
"That gives us total freedom to move against Mercer tonight,"
I replied,
checking the fit of my earpiece hidden beneath my swept-back hair.
"Julian Mercer believes he is completely untouchable inside that ballroom,"
I continued,
feeling the familiar surge of tactical focus settling into my veins.
"He thinks Facility Seven was ruined and that I am still scrambling to save my company's research."
"The Deputy Secretary of Defense,
Robert Harrington,
is sitting at Mercer's VIP table,"
Ethan warned,
zooming in on a satellite facial-recognition feed.
"Harrington controls the federal budget allocations for defense technology contracts.
If Harrington is compromised by Mercer's syndicate,
this conspiracy goes far beyond corporate embezzlement."
"Then we cut off the serpent's head in front of everyone,"
I said,
opening the SUV door and stepping out into the cool night air.
We walked toward the grand entrance with calm,
unhurried grace,
blending seamlessly into the stream of arriving guests.
At the security checkpoint,
two private guards scanned our forged invitation credentials provided by military intelligence.
The scanner beeped green,
and the guard nodded politely,
stepping aside to let us pass.
We stepped through the massive gold doors into the grand ballroom,
where crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant,
dazzling light across hundreds of laughing guests holding champagne glasses.
Classical orchestral music echoed through the towering room,
masking the dangerous political deals being forged in every corner.
I swept my eyes across the elevated VIP mezzanine floor,
and there he was.
Julian Mercer sat comfortably in an plush leather armchair,
holding a crystal glass of scotch.
He was a man in his late fifties,
with neatly slicked silver hair,
a sharp tailored tuxedo,
and eyes that were entirely devoid of human empathy.
Beside him sat Deputy Secretary Robert Harrington,
laughing at a joke Mercer had just made.
"Target acquired,"
I whispered softly into my hidden microphone.
"Ethan,
May you like
get into position near the secondary exit.
I am going to pay Mr. Mercer a personal visit."
