Chapter 5 - The Point of No Return

We drove to Caleb's downtown office building in complete silence,
the tension in the car thick and suffocating.
I stayed in the passenger seat while Maya went inside,
carrying the thick envelope that contained the end of my old life.
I watched the glass doors of the lobby,
my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
Part of me expected Caleb to run out,
to beg for forgiveness,
to tell me it was all a terrible nightmare.
But the logical part of me,
the part that had survived the night,
knew better.
Fifteen minutes later,
Maya emerged,
her face completely expressionless.
She got into the car,
started the engine,
and finally looked at me.
"He's been served,"
she said simply.
"What did he do?"

my voice barely a whisper.
"He tried to laugh it off,

but his face went completely white when he saw the first page."
I closed my eyes,
letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for twenty-one years.
It was done,
the point of no return had been crossed,
and there was no going back to the comfortable lies of yesterday.
My phone beeped,
a final text from Caleb breaking through the silence.
"You will regret this,
Claire,
you are destroying our family for nothing."
I didn't reply,
because there was nothing left to say to a stranger.
I looked out the window as we drove away,
watching the city blur past,
knowing that the hardest part was still to come.
Mark texted me a few minutes later,
a short,
simple message that confirmed the gravity of the situation.
"I found her second phone,
thank you for telling me,
I'm filing tomorrow."
Two marriages,
destroyed by two selfish people in the span of a single night.
I pulled my coat tighter around my shoulders,
feeling the chill of a new,
uncertain future settling over me.
May you like
I had survived the midnight betrayal,
and now,
