Chapter 13 - The House of Cards Crumbles

The following morning,

the storm had finally broken,

leaving the city washed clean,

and bathed in cold,

bright sunlight.

Maya called me at exactly eight in the morning,

her voice buzzing with an undeniable,

victorious energy that instantly lifted my spirits.

"Are you sitting down?"

she asked,

the smile completely evident in her tone.

"I am,"

I replied,

taking a sip of my steaming coffee,

bracing myself for whatever news she was about to deliver.

"Mr. Sterling just formally withdrew as Caleb's legal counsel,"

Maya announced,

the words ringing through the phone like the sweet sound of a victory bell.

I gasped,

almost dropping my mug,

my mind racing to comprehend the magnitude of this development.

"Why?"

I asked,

my voice breathless,

and eager.

"Because Caleb cannot pay his retainer,"

Maya explained,

laughing a rich,

satisfied laugh.

"With all of his accounts frozen,

and his offshore assets under federal investigation due to the fraud allegations,

Sterling realized he was never going to get paid."

It was the ultimate poetic justice,

a perfectly orchestrated downfall for a man who believed his money made him invincible.

But Maya was not finished,

she had one more weapon in her arsenal,

and she was ready to fire it.

"Furthermore,"

she continued,

her voice dropping into a serious,

professional register,

"Caleb's firm was notified of the impending subpoenas regarding his offshore transfers."

I held my breath,

knowing how seriously his accounting firm took their reputation,

and their strict ethical guidelines.

"They fired him,

Claire,"

Maya said softly,

delivering the final,

fatal strike.

"They terminated his partnership agreement this morning,

citing a breach of moral conduct,

and financial irregularities."

Tears sprang to my eyes,

but they were not tears of sorrow,

or grief.

They were tears of absolute,

overwhelming relief.

The man who had stood in that mediation room,

arrogant,

smug,

and cruel,

had been completely dismantled,

stripped of his power,

his wealth,

and his prestigious title.

He had thrown away twenty-one years of loyalty,

love,

and quiet devotion,

all for a few stolen moments on a living room couch,

and a secret bank account he could no longer touch.

"He is calling my office every five minutes,"

Maya added,

breaking through my quiet revelation.

"He is begging to sign the counter-offer,

begging to settle this before he faces criminal charges for hiding the assets."

"Let him sweat,"

I told her,

my voice stronger,

and more confident than it had been in my entire life.

"Let him sit in his empty,

rented hotel room,

and let him realize exactly what he threw away."

I hung up the phone,

walking over to the window,

and looking down at the busy city streets below.

I had spent two decades shrinking myself,

modifying my behavior,

and quieting my voice to fit into Caleb's perfect,

rigid world.

But that world was gone now,

burned to the ground by his own reckless hands,

and from the ashes,

a new,

May you like

fierce,

and unbreakable woman had finally emerged.
