Chapter 1 - The Question Left Unasked

The cold light of dawn crept through the cheap curtains of the hotel room,

casting long,

gray shadows across the worn carpet.

I had not slept a single second,

and my eyes were burning from staring at the bright screen of my phone.

Caleb’s words kept repeating in my mind,

twisting the knife deeper into my chest.

He had asked me not to throw away twenty-one years,

as if I were the one who had carelessly discarded our vows on the living room sofa.

I picked up the phone again,

my fingers hovering over his name.

I still had not asked the question that could expose everything,

the question that had been burning in my throat since I saw Tessa wrapped in my mother's blanket.

I opened our shared bank account app,

praying that my suspicions were just the product of a terrified mind.

But the truth was there,

hidden in plain sight,

buried beneath mundane grocery purchases and utility bills.

There was a second credit card,

one I had never seen,

linked to his primary checking account.

I clicked on the statements,

and my breath caught in my throat.

Hotel rooms in the city,

expensive jewelry stores,

and endless dinners at restaurants I had never been to.

He had been living a double life,

funding his affair while I sat at home,

believing we were building a future together.

The betrayal was not just emotional,

it was financial,

methodical,

and painfully deliberate.

I took screenshots of every single transaction,

making sure the dates matched the times he claimed to be working late.

My hands were shaking so violently that I almost dropped the phone,

but I forced myself to keep scrolling.

I needed to know everything,

every single lie,

every stolen moment.

The gray blanket was just the ending of a story I had not known was being written.

At seven in the morning,

Maya texted me.

She told me to drink some water,

breathe,

and wait for her to arrive.

She was bringing her laptop,

a printer,

and a mountain of legal paperwork.

I looked at my reflection in the hotel mirror,

barely recognizing the pale,

hollow-eyed woman staring back at me.

Twenty-one years of marriage,

gone in the blink of an eye.

But I wasn't going to break,

not yet.

May you like

I was going to survive this,

and I was going to make sure Caleb felt every ounce of the pain he had caused.
