Chapter 4 - The Illusions of Truth

By noon,

the paperwork was ready.

Maya had drafted a petition for divorce,

a restraining order on the marital assets,

and a formal request for discovery regarding his hidden accounts.

I signed my name on the dotted lines,

watching my marriage dissolve into legal jargon and financial calculations.

It felt surreal,

like I was watching a movie about someone else's tragic life.

My phone rang again,

but this time,

it wasn't Caleb.

It was an unknown number,

and when I answered,

a trembling,

weeping voice filled my ear.

It was Tessa.

"Claire,

please,"

she sobbed,

her voice high and desperate.

"You have to tell Mark you made it up,

he's packing his bags,

he's taking the kids,

please!"

I felt a sickening surge of power,

followed immediately by a wave of profound disgust.

"I didn't make anything up,

Tessa,"

I said,

my voice surprisingly steady.

"You made a choice,

and now you have to live with the consequences of that choice."

"It meant nothing!"

she screamed through the phone,

"He was just lonely,

we were just talking,

it was a mistake!"

I laughed,

a bitter,

hollow sound that startled even Maya.

"A mistake is forgetting to buy milk,

Tessa,

not sleeping with your neighbor's husband under a blanket given to them by her dead father."

I hung up,

blocking her number immediately.

They were both so pathetic,

so desperate to avoid accountability,

clinging to the illusion that apologies could erase the damage.

But the damage was permanent,

etched into my memory like a scar.

Maya handed me a fresh cup of coffee,

her eyes fierce and proud.

"We serve him today,"

she announced,

"at his office,

in front of all his colleagues,

so he can't hide from this anymore."

I nodded,

feeling a strange sense of anticipation replacing my sorrow.

Caleb had always cared about his reputation more than anything,

always cultivating the image of the perfect family man.

Today,

May you like

that image was going to shatter,

and everyone was going to see the monster hiding behind the charming smile.
