Chapter 3 - The Desperate Gaslight

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute,

heavy enough to crush stone.

Finally,

Mark exhaled a shaky breath,

and asked me if this was some kind of sick joke.

I told him about the video,

the photos,

the credit card statements,

and the gray blanket.

I could hear the devastation settling into his bones,

the quiet shattering of a good man's reality.

He hung up without saying goodbye,

and I knew a storm was about to hit my suburban street.

I walked back into the main room,

where Maya was already glaring at me.

"You called him,

didn't you?"

she asked,

shaking her head.

I didn't have to answer,

because my phone immediately started buzzing.

It was Caleb,

calling for the twentieth time that morning.

I silenced it,

but the texts started pouring in like a flood.

"What did you say to Mark?"

he demanded.

"Tessa is hysterical,

you are ruining people's lives over a misunderstanding!"

I stared at the screen,

baffled by the sheer audacity of his lies.

He was still trying to control the narrative,

still trying to gaslight me into believing I was crazy.

"A misunderstanding?"

I typed back,

my fingers hitting the keys with brutal force.

"Is the secret credit card a misunderstanding too,

or just the thousands of dollars you spent at the diamond district?"

The little typing bubble appeared on the screen,

disappeared,

and appeared again.

He was panicking,

realizing that his careful web of deceit was unravelling faster than he could patch it.

Maya grabbed the phone from my hand,

putting it face down on the desk.

"No more contact,"

she ordered.

"He is going to try to manipulate you,

make you doubt your own sanity,

and we cannot give him that ammunition."

She was right,

because twenty-one years of marriage meant Caleb knew exactly which buttons to push.

He knew my insecurities,

my fears,

and my desperate desire for a peaceful home.

But the woman who wanted peace had died last night,

suffocated under the weight of his betrayal.

I was someone else now,

May you like

someone colder,

and someone who was ready to fight.
