Chapter 9 - The Blood Money Trail

The morning headlines on Sunday hit the city like a seismic shockwave.

The front page of every major newspaper featured the high-definition photograph of Julian pinned to the St. Patrick's Cathedral floor in handcuffs.

Wall Street analysts predicted the immediate collapse of Sterling Global Maritime before trading opened at 9:30 AM on Monday.

Inside my father’s Westchester study, the tension had finally broken.

Lily sat on the sofa with a warm blanket across her shoulders, her back carefully treated and bandaged by a specialist from Mount Sinai.

Thomas paced in front of the fireplace, holding a sheaf of newly faxed legal documents.

"The federal receiver just sent over the confirmation," Thomas said, his voice trembling with sheer relief.

"All contracts, notes, and debt instruments held by Sterling entities have been placed in federal receivership."

"They cannot demand repayment."

"In fact, the receiver is examining whether we are entitled to triple damages under the anti-trust statutes."

"You saved everything, Eleanor," our mother wept, holding my hand tightly against her chest.

"We thought our only choice was to sacrifice Lily's happiness to keep a roof over our heads."

"You should never have had to make that choice, Mom," I said, kissing her forehead.

"Predators like Harrison count on good families feeling too ashamed to fight back."

Suddenly, my personal encrypted phone rang on the coffee table.

The caller ID showed an unlisted number with a 202 area code: Washington, D.C.

I answered and put it on speakerphone.

"Eleanor, it's Director Hayes," the voice came through with grave urgency.

"Director," I acknowledged, signaling Marcus to step into the room.

"We have a complication regarding Harrison Sterling."

My chest tightened instantly.

"Did a judge grant bail?"

"No, the bail was denied across the board," Hayes replied.

"However, during the midnight asset seizure at Sterling Tower, our agents discovered a hidden vault behind the mahogany wall in his penthouse."

"Inside were personal ledgers detailing off-the-books transactions spanning twenty years."

"What kind of transactions?"

"Bribes paid to three federal judges, two maritime commissioners, and half a dozen foreign port authorities."

"Harrison realized this morning that his fortune is completely gone."

"He just gave his attorney a sealed envelope addressed directly to you."

"To me?" I asked, exchanging a sharp glance with Marcus.

"He claims he wasn't acting alone in targeting the Vance shipping fleet."

"He claims someone inside your father’s own inner circle was feeding him internal financial weakness reports from day one."

Thomas stopped pacing, his face suddenly drained of color.

"That's impossible," Thomas stammered.

"Only three people had access to our fleet telemetry and debt schedules."

I looked at the phone, my jaw clenching once more.

"Bring the letter to the field office immediately, Director."

"It seems our hunt isn't over yet."
