Chapter 3 - The Rehearsal Trap

The ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was dripping in white orchids, silver candelabras, and the suffocating perfume of Old Money.

Two hundred elite guests mingled over champagne flutes, murmuring praise about the union of Vance heritage and Sterling billions.

Julian Sterling stood in the center of the room, surrounded by hedge-fund heirs and sycophantic business partners.

His bespoke Italian tuxedo fit his broad frame flawlessly.

His blond hair was slicked back, accentuating his sharp, predatory jawline.

When his eyes caught Lily entering the room, his lips curved into a cold, victorious smirk.

Lily wore a high-collared emerald velvet dress designed specifically to conceal the bandages beneath.

Her steps were slow and measured.

Julian excused himself from his circle and glided toward her like a hawk descending on a field mouse.

"You look adequately presentable, darling," he murmured, his hand snaking around her waist.

His fingers intentionally dug directly into the fresh bruises along her ribs.

Lily flinched, a tiny gasp catching in her throat.

"Did you hear what I said?" Julian whispered, leaning down so his mouth hovered near her ear.

"Smile, Lily."

"The New York Times photographer is standing at twelve o'clock."

"Show them how happy you are to become my property."

I stepped forward from behind a marble pillar, my champagne glass raised in a mock salute.

"Good evening, Julian," I said smoothly.

Julian’s dark eyes flicked over to me, dripping with open condescension.

"Ah, the big sister," he drawled loudly enough for the nearby table to hear.

"The struggling corporate clerk."

"I'm surprised you managed to find a dress that didn't come off a department store clearance rack."

"Some of us spend our money on substance rather than show, Julian," I replied evenly.

"Is that so?" he chuckled, taking a sip of his bourbon.

"Well, substance didn't keep your father from crawling to mine on his knees for capital."

"Make sure you eat plenty of the caviar tonight, Eleanor."

"It’s likely the closest you'll ever come to true luxury."

Before I could answer, Harrison Sterling himself approached our group.

The patriarch was a hulking man in his late sixties, with cold steel-blue eyes and an aura of ruthless authority.

He barely glanced at Lily before fixing his gaze on my father, who stood a few feet back.

"Thomas," Harrison boomed, his voice carrying an unspoken threat across the ballroom.

"I trust the final marriage contracts were signed and delivered to my legal team this afternoon?"

Thomas cleared his dry throat.

"My legal advisor is still looking over the third addendum, Harrison."

Harrison’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a chilling grimace.

"Tell your advisor that if those papers aren't fully executed before the ceremony tomorrow, I will file for the liquidation of your marine docks at eight on Monday."

"Do we have an understanding, Thomas?"

"He understands perfectly, Mr. Sterling," I interjected, stepping directly into Harrison’s line of sight.

Harrison narrowed his eyes at me, clearly irritated that a woman dared interrupt his business intimidation.

"And who might you be?" Harrison demanded.

"Eleanor Vance," I replied with an icy smile.

"The daughter who doesn't frighten easily."

Harrison let out a short, dismissive bark of laughter.

"Thomas, your eldest child needs to learn her place before she costs you whatever little dignity you have left."

"Don't worry, Mr. Sterling," I whispered, holding his gaze until he looked away in slight discomfort.

"Tomorrow, everyone in this city will learn exactly where they belong."

Across the room, my phone gave three distinct vibrational pulses.

It was the signal from Agent Marcus.

The federal warrants for Sterling Maritime’s hidden Swiss vaults had just been signed by the presiding magistrate.
