Chapter 6 - The Shattered Vows

The silence inside the grand nave of St. Patrick’s Cathedral was suffocating.

Every eye in the audience was glued to the altar as Father Callahan adjusted his vestments and opened the gilded ceremonial bible.

Julian’s fingers dug deeper into Lily’s palm, an unspoken reminder of his control.

"Dearly beloved," the priest began, his deep baritone reverberating across the stone arches.

"We are gathered here today in the sight of God and before this congregation to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony."

I stood three feet away among the bridesmaids, feeling the discreet transmitter vibrating against my wrist inside the satin bouquet.

Across the aisle, Harrison Sterling sat proudly in the front pew, his chest puffed out like an emperor observing a coronation.

He gave a small, confident nod to the banking executives seated to his right.

"Julian Sterling, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health?"

Julian turned toward Lily, flashing the polished, radiant smile that had graced cover stories across the nation.

"I do," Julian said clearly, his voice projecting through the wireless microphone clipped to his lapel.

The crowd let out a collective, soft sigh of admiration.

"And do you, Lily Vance, take this man—"

"Stop," Lily interrupted.

The single syllable cut through the cathedral like an axe through dry wood.

The priest paused mid-sentence, his brow furrowing in confusion.

Julian’s smile tightened at the edges, his eyes flashing with warning.

"Lily, darling, don't play silly games now," Julian muttered beneath his breath, trying to laugh it off toward the crowd.

In the front row, Harrison straightened up, his brows slamming together in sudden fury.

Lily slowly pulled her hand free from Julian’s grip and took two firm steps backward down the carpeted stairs.

"I said stop," Lily repeated, her voice amplified through the acoustics of the vaulted ceiling.

A murmur rippled across the eight hundred guests like sudden wind through dry grass.

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure venom.

"You take one more step away from me, and your father is ruined before sundown," Julian hissed through clenched teeth.

"Let's see whose empire falls first, Julian," I said, stepping past the maid of honor and taking my position beside my sister.

Julian glared at me with open disgust.

"Someone call security and throw this pathetic woman out of the church!" Julian barked toward the back.

No security guard moved an inch.

At that exact moment, the four towering LED screens on either side of the altar flickered black.

A low electronic hum vibrated through the church sound system.

Harrison leaped to his feet from the pew, shouting for his audio technicians.

Then the massive screens burst back into blinding, high-definition life.

It was not the bridal photo montage.

It was a crystal-clear recording of Julian Sterling’s private bedroom, date-stamped three nights prior.

Julian’s face appeared twenty feet high, laughing callously as he held a cracked leather belt.

His voice exploded through every speaker in the cathedral:

"Her father owes forty million, and that means I own every breath she takes."

The entire cathedral gasped in unanimous horror.

Socialites dropped their programs, and board members stared in frozen disbelief.

Lily reached up, unzipped the side of her silk dress, and let the shoulder fall forward.

Beneath the bright chandelier, the jagged, bloody lacerations across her pale spine were visible to every camera and every guest.

A scream tore from our mother’s throat in the second row.

Julian’s face drained of every ounce of color.

"Turn those damn screens off right now!" Harrison roared, his voice cracking with hysteria.

Before he could take another step toward the altar, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral burst open.

Dozens of armed federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers flooded down the aisles.

Marcus led the formation, holding up a laminated federal warrant high above his head.

"United States Marshals and Department of Justice," Marcus announced, his voice booming over the chaos.

"Julian Sterling and Harrison Sterling, you are both under arrest for federal conspiracy, interstate extortion, and aggravated felony assault."
