Chapter 9: The Last Lie

The room erupted.

Officers rushed toward the exits.

Guests shouted.

People moved in every direction.

But I only saw one thing.

The empty space where Vanessa had been standing.

She was gone.

Again.

Just like Emma six years earlier.

Just like every person Vanessa had touched.

She disappeared when the truth got close.

The officer cursed quietly.

"Lock down the building.""

Everyone scattered.

I stood there frozen.

Emma grabbed my arm.

"Daniel.""

I looked at her.

"She ran.""

Emma nodded.

"But she’s not done.""

She was right.

I knew it.

Vanessa had spent years controlling every piece of this nightmare.

She wouldn’t simply vanish.

Not unless she had another move.

The officer returned minutes later.

"We found a service exit.""

"Did she leave?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

My stomach dropped.

"How?""

"Someone opened the door from outside.""

I looked at Ryan.

He immediately shook his head.

"Not me.""

Nobody believed him.

The officer stared.

"You’re coming with us too.""

Ryan didn’t fight.

He just looked tired.

As if he knew the game was over.

Before they took him away, he stopped.

"Daniel.""

I looked back.

"There’s something you need to know.""

"What?""

Ryan glanced at Emma.

"Vanessa didn’t create everything.""

Emma went still.

"Ryan.""

He ignored her.

"The first plan wasn’t hers.""

My chest tightened.

"Whose was it?""

Ryan looked at me.

"Yours.""

The words were impossible.

"What?""

Ryan shook his head.

"Not the real you.""

He looked toward the computer.

"The person who made those videos wanted you to believe you were capable of it.""

I stared.

"Who?""

Ryan didn’t answer.

He just said:

"Find the original recording.""

Then the officers took him away.

The room slowly emptied.

Only a few people remained.

Me.

Emma.

Lily.

And a thousand unanswered questions.

We went back upstairs.

To the hidden office.

The computer was still open.

The video file remained.

But the officer found something.

A hidden folder.

Created the same day Emma disappeared.

Inside was one file.

No name.

Just a date.

I clicked it.

The screen showed a bedroom.

My old house.

Six years earlier.

I recognized it immediately.

The camera angle was different.

Someone had been inside my home.

Watching us.

Then a man entered the room.

I froze.

Because I recognized him.

Not from memory.

From the files.

From the pictures.

A man Vanessa had never mentioned.

A man standing beside her in old photographs.

Emma covered her mouth.

"Daniel...""

The man looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

"If you’re watching this, everything worked.""

My blood ran cold.

The voice was unfamiliar.

But the face was familiar.

Because I had seen him before.

In old family photos.

At my wedding.

Standing behind me.

The man smiled.

"My name is David Carter.""

I stopped breathing.

My father.

A man who had died ten years earlier.

The video continued.

"I know what you’re thinking.""

The man smiled.

"You thought I was gone.""

Emma looked at me.

"Your father?""

I couldn’t answer.

Because my father was dead.

He had been buried.

I had attended his funeral.

But the person on the screen was him.

Older.

Alive.

And talking.

The recording continued.

"I made mistakes.""

He looked down.

"But my son made bigger ones.""

My heart pounded.

"What is this?""

The video continued.

"I knew Daniel would never understand.""

The man leaned closer.

"So I created a backup plan.""

A chill moved through me.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Vanessa was never supposed to marry Daniel.""

Emma stepped closer.

"What?""

The video showed another person entering the room.

A woman.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

My father smiled.

"This is the woman who will take care of my family after I’m gone.""

The woman turned toward the camera.

And my blood froze.

Because I knew her.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

From the past.

The woman was Claire.

Sophie’s mother.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily whispered:

"Daddy...""

I looked at the screen.

At my dead father’s face.

At the impossible truth.

My entire life had been built on a lie.

May you like

And the person who started it all…

was the man I spent my childhood believing was the only person who protected me.
