Chapter 2: The Woman Who Never Left

I couldn’t move.

My hand remained on the door handle, but my mind was somewhere else.

Six years.

Six years of unanswered questions.

Six years of imagining every possible reason Emma disappeared.

And now her voice was on the other side of a locked door.

Alive.

Weak.

Afraid.

The entire room watched me.

Nobody knew what to do.

The musicians had stopped playing.

The servers stood frozen with trays in their hands.

My family looked from me to Vanessa, waiting for someone to explain the impossible.

But Vanessa said nothing.

That frightened me more than anything.

A person accused of something they didn’t do usually fights.

They defend themselves.

They demand answers.

Vanessa just stood there.

Silent.

Like she already knew the truth was coming.

I turned the handle.

The door opened slowly.

The hinges groaned.

A wave of cold air escaped from the dark room.

"Lily," I whispered.

She grabbed my hand.

"I told you, Daddy.""

I stepped inside.

The room was almost completely dark.

Only a small lamp in the corner flickered weakly.

It wasn’t a storage room.

It wasn’t an empty office.

It was a hidden bedroom.

A small bed sat against the wall.

There were blankets.

A water bottle.

Medical supplies.

And photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

My heart sank.

"Emma?""

A weak movement came from behind a curtain.

I rushed forward.

And then I saw her.

My wife.

Older.

Thinner.

Her hair shorter.

Her face pale.

But unmistakably Emma.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

We just stared.

Like two people seeing a ghost.

Then her lips trembled.

"Daniel.""

My knees almost gave out.

"Emma...""

I reached for her.

She grabbed my hand with surprising strength.

"You came.""

The words broke me.

I had imagined this moment a thousand times.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined screaming.

But seeing her sitting there, looking like someone who had been trapped inside a nightmare, all I felt was pain.

"Who did this to you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Vanessa.""

The name felt impossible.

"No.""

Emma looked toward the doorway.

"She’s been planning this for years.""

I heard footsteps behind me.

Vanessa.

"Liar.""

Her voice was shaking.

I turned.

She stood at the entrance.

For the first time, the perfect image she had built was gone.

No charming smile.

No calm expression.

Just panic.

Emma flinched.

That reaction told me everything.

Vanessa stepped inside.

"Daniel, don’t listen to her.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because she’s manipulating you.""

Emma gave a weak laugh.

A painful laugh.

"Still doing that, Vanessa?""

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you’re talking about.""

Emma looked at me.

"She told you I abandoned you, didn’t she?""

I couldn’t answer.

Because she was right.

Vanessa took a step closer.

"Daniel, she left.""

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

Vanessa raised her voice.

"She left you and your daughter.""

"No, she kidnapped me.""

The room went silent.

Even Vanessa stopped.

I looked at Emma.

"What?""

Emma swallowed.

"Six years ago, I discovered something.""

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"Something about Vanessa.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"Stop.""

Emma continued.

"I found out she was secretly meeting with someone from my past.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Emma looked at Vanessa.

"Her brother.""

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"What did he have to do with you?""

Emma looked down.

"Your first wife wasn’t Vanessa’s first target.""

I felt the room spin.

"What does that mean?""

Before Emma could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

"Daniel, this is insane.""

I looked at her.

"Then explain.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the first time I saw Vanessa speechless.

Lily moved closer to Emma.

"Mommy.""

Emma reached for her.

The second their hands touched, both of them started crying.

"I’m sorry," Emma whispered.

Lily shook her head.

"I knew you didn’t leave me.""

Those words destroyed me.

Because my daughter had believed something I had forced myself not to believe.

She had known.

A child had trusted her mother more than I trusted my own instincts.

I walked toward Vanessa.

"How long?""

She stared at me.

"Daniel...""

"How long did you know Emma was here?""

Her silence answered.

My chest tightened.

"You knew.""

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

"I can explain.""

"No.""

My voice surprised even me.

"Not anymore.""

The guests outside began whispering.

Phones were coming out.

The perfect engagement party had become something else entirely.

A crime scene.

A confession.

A nightmare.

Then Emma grabbed my arm.

"Daniel, we need to leave.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

Her expression changed.

Fear returned.

"Because this room isn’t the only secret Vanessa has.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What else?""

Emma looked toward the hallway.

"She didn’t keep me here because she wanted you.""

I waited.

"She kept me here because of what I knew.""

Before I could ask another question, a loud crash came from the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

A man stood near the entrance.

A man I had never seen before.

Vanessa looked at him.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

Emma whispered:

"That’s him.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Who?""

Emma held my hand tighter.

"The person who helped Vanessa make me disappear.""

The stranger smiled.

Then he said my name.

May you like

"Daniel Carter.""

And I realized the nightmare had just begun.
