Chapter 8: The Daughter I Never Knew
I hated that moment.
Not because I had something to hide.
But because I knew what it looked like.
A man standing in a room full of secrets.
A husband accused by his missing wife.
A father discovering another daughter existed.
A fiancé exposed as a criminal.
And now a question about the one night I had spent years avoiding.
Emma looked at me.
Not angrily.
Not accusingly.
Just hurt.
"Daniel.""
I swallowed.
"The night Lily was born...""
My voice faded.
Everyone waited.
"I wasn’t at the hospital because...""
I stopped.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
"I wasn’t alone.""
Emma’s face changed.
A small crack of pain.
"Who were you with?""
I looked down.
"My mother.""
Nobody expected that.
Emma blinked.
"What?""
"My mother called me that morning.""
I took a breath.
"She had collapsed.""
I remembered it clearly.
The hospital hallway.
The smell of antiseptic.
The phone in my hand.
The doctor telling me my mother needed surgery.
"I went to be with her.""
Emma stared.
"But you told me you were stuck at work.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
That question hurt.
Because I deserved it.
"Because I was scared.""
"Of what?""
I looked at her.
"Of disappointing you.""
The room was silent.
"I thought I could handle both. I thought I could leave my mother, get back to you, and everything would be fine.""
I looked at Lily.
"But then your labor started early.""
Emma’s eyes filled.
"And you weren’t there.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I wasn’t.""
The truth finally existed between us.
"I made a terrible choice.""
Emma looked away.
"I spent years thinking you chose not to come.""
"I know.""
"And Vanessa knew that.""
I nodded slowly.
"She used it.""
The officer looked between us.
"So this explains the recording?""
I nodded.
"She took the worst moment of my life and built a story around it.""
Emma closed her eyes.
"I thought you didn’t care.""
My heart broke.
"I cared more than anything.""
A long silence followed.
Then Lily walked over.
"Daddy?""
I looked down.
"Yes?""
She held my hand.
"Can we find Sophie?""
The question reminded me.
My other daughter.
A child I never knew existed.
A child who somehow knew my name.
The officer looked at the phone.
"We need to trace the call.""
The line was still open.
A faint sound came from the speaker.
Breathing.
The officer lifted it.
"Sophie? Are you still there?""
The girl answered softly.
"Yes.""
Everyone leaned closer.
"Can you tell us where you are?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because Vanessa will know.""
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
She looked furious.
The officer asked:
"Are you being held somewhere?""
A pause.
Then:
"No.""
I felt relief for one second.
Then she continued.
"But someone is.""
My blood went cold.
"Who?""
Sophie whispered:
"My mother.""
The room froze.
Emma stepped forward.
"Your mother?""
Sophie’s voice shook.
"Vanessa told me she was gone.""
Nobody moved.
"Who is your mother?""
The girl hesitated.
Then:
"Her name is Claire.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
Ryan whispered:
"No.""
The officer looked at him.
"You know that name?""
Ryan didn’t answer.
"Ryan.""
He finally spoke.
"Claire was Vanessa’s sister.""
Emma went pale.
"Her sister?""
Ryan nodded.
"Vanessa told everyone Claire disappeared.""
A terrible realization hit me.
Another missing woman.
Another story.
Another lie.
The officer looked at Vanessa.
"Where is Claire?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don’t know.""
Nobody believed her.
The officer turned back to the phone.
"Sophie, listen to me. We’re going to help you.""
The girl started crying.
"I tried before.""
"When?""
"Two years ago.""
"Who stopped you?""
The answer came quietly.
"Vanessa.""
My hands clenched.
"How?""
Sophie whispered:
"She told me if I talked, she would tell Dad that I was the reason his family broke apart.""
My heart sank.
A child carrying guilt that wasn’t hers.
The same way Lily carried years of missing her mother.
Vanessa had built an entire world around hurting people.
The officer moved toward her.
"You’re coming with us.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone stopped.
"You think this ends with me?""
Her eyes moved toward the window.
"You still don’t know who started everything.""
Emma stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa looked at her.
"You really don’t remember.""
Emma’s face changed.
"Remember what?""
Vanessa smiled.
"The night Daniel almost found out.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"The night before Emma disappeared.""
I waited.
"You weren’t the only person being watched.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who was watching me?""
Vanessa smiled.
Then the lights went out.
The room went completely dark.
Someone screamed.
A door slammed.
May you like
And when the emergency lights turned on…
Vanessa was gone.
