Chapter 7: The Voice That Wasn’t Mine
The video kept playing.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The sound of my own voice filled the room, and every word felt like a knife being pushed deeper.
"Emma has to disappear tonight.""
I heard it again.
My voice.
My tone.
My exact way of speaking.
But I knew I had never said those words.
The screen showed a dark room.
A table.
Two people sitting across from each other.
One of them was Vanessa.
The other was me.
Or someone who looked like me.
The camera angle was poor.
The lighting was dim.
But the voice was clear.
Too clear.
"I can’t believe you’re helping me," the fake version of me said.
Vanessa smiled.
"You don’t have to believe it. You just have to do what I tell you.""
The room exploded with whispers.
Guests stared at me.
Some looked afraid.
Some looked disgusted.
I didn’t blame them.
If I were watching this from the outside, I would think the same thing.
I would think I was guilty.
I looked at Emma.
She wasn’t looking at the screen.
She was looking at me.
And somehow that hurt even more.
"Daniel," she whispered.
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what to say.
The video continued.
The fake me leaned forward.
"After tonight, everyone will think she left.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Exactly.""
My hands shook.
The officer stepped closer to the computer.
"Stop the video.""
Nobody listened.
The recording continued.
The fake me said:
"And Daniel?""
Vanessa looked up.
"What?""
"Make sure he never finds out.""
Then the screen went black.
Silence.
Heavy.
Complete.
The officer turned to me.
"Mr. Carter.""
I looked at him.
"I didn’t do that.""
He studied my face.
"I’m not saying you did.""
But everyone else was.
I could feel it.
The doubt.
The fear.
The questions.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
Her confidence slowly returning.
"Daniel, maybe you don’t remember.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She tilted her head.
"Maybe you were more involved than you think.""
Emma immediately stepped forward.
"Don’t listen to her.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Why? Because you know what happened?""
Emma froze.
That was the problem.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had pieces of the truth.
Except me.
I walked toward the computer.
"Who created this video?""
Nobody answered.
Ryan looked away.
That told me enough.
I turned toward him.
"You know.""
He remained silent.
"Ryan.""
He sighed.
"Yes.""
The room shifted.
The officer moved closer.
"Explain.""
Ryan looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying this secret too long.
"The video was created six years ago.""
"By who?""
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
"Her.""
Vanessa’s face changed.
"You’re lying.""
Ryan laughed quietly.
"That’s all you know how to do.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"Why?""
She didn’t answer.
"Why make a fake video?""
Her expression hardened.
"Because nobody would believe Emma.""
Emma looked confused.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at her.
"You were always the perfect one.""
The bitterness in her voice surprised me.
"You had everything.""
Emma shook her head.
"Vanessa...""
"No.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You had Daniel. You had Lily. You had a beautiful house. A family.""
Her eyes filled with anger.
"And I had nothing.""
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then I remembered the locked room.
The missing years.
The fear in Emma’s eyes.
"That doesn’t give you the right.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You don’t understand.""
"No.""
My voice became colder.
"I understand perfectly.""
The officer approached Vanessa.
"Ma’am, you need to stay where you are.""
She ignored him.
Instead, she looked at Emma.
"You should tell him the rest.""
Emma went pale.
My stomach tightened.
"What rest?""
Emma looked away.
Vanessa smiled.
"Tell him why you really trusted the video.""
I turned to Emma.
"What does she mean?""
Emma closed her eyes.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Because the video wasn’t the only evidence.""
My chest tightened.
"What else?""
Emma reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small object.
An old USB drive.
"I found this the night I disappeared.""
She handed it to the officer.
"I copied it before Vanessa took everything.""
The officer examined it.
"What’s on here?""
Emma looked at me.
"Proof.""
"Of what?""
Her voice dropped.
"That Vanessa wasn’t trying to frame you.""
I waited.
"She was trying to make you believe you were a monster.""
A chill moved through me.
The officer connected the USB drive to the computer.
A folder appeared.
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Audio recordings.
Documents.
Then one file caught my attention.
"Daniel Carter.""
The officer opened it.
A recording started.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Vanessa.
"I know he’ll believe it.""
My heart stopped.
Another voice answered.
Ryan.
"You’re sure?""
Vanessa laughed.
"He already doubts himself.""
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
"I don’t need to convince him he hurt Emma.""
A pause.
"I only need him to believe he could.""
Nobody spoke.
The officer stopped the audio.
Ryan looked down.
Vanessa looked furious.
"You weren’t supposed to find that.""
The officer immediately stepped forward.
"Vanessa Blake, you are now a suspect in an active investigation.""
She finally looked afraid.
But then she smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
A confident one.
"You still don’t understand.""
The officer frowned.
"What?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Daniel has no idea what happened before Emma disappeared.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Stop.""
But she continued.
"Ask him where he was the night Lily was born.""
I froze.
"What?""
Emma looked at me.
Confusion crossed her face.
Vanessa smiled.
"Ask him.""
The room became silent.
Because suddenly I realized something.
There was one night in my life I had spent years trying not to remember.
The night Lily was born.
The night I was supposed to be at the hospital.
The night I had been somewhere else.
Somewhere I never explained.
Emma stared at me.
"Daniel?""
I couldn’t speak.
Because I knew what she was thinking.
May you like
And I knew the question was coming.
"Where were you that night?""
