Chapter 6 - The Price of Absolute Greed and the Terrifying Sound of a Shattering Financial Empire

Richard Hale began to violently and uncontrollably shake,
his expensive imported silk tie suddenly looking exactly like a tight and suffocating noose around his incredibly pale neck,
as he finally realized the terrifying and irreversible magnitude of his fatal corporate mistake.
The twelve wealthy and previously arrogant investors,
who just a few short moments ago had felt completely invincible and powerful in their high glass towers,
now shrank back fearfully and pitifully in their expensive leather office chairs.
They were all incredibly wealthy men of legitimate business,
men who traded invisible digital stocks and built massive corporate portfolios,
but they were absolutely completely unprepared to face a true monster from the hidden underworld.
Ethan did not even need to raise his powerful voice,
because his mere physical presence commanded absolute and terrifying silence in the massive room.
His four heavily armed bodyguards stood completely motionless like giant stone statues by the heavy oak doors,
their dark and unreadable eyes scanning the terrified executives for any sudden or foolish movements.
"You completely misunderstood my extreme generosity,
Richard,"
Ethan said smoothly,
his deep voice echoing hauntingly across the long polished mahogany table.
"When I initially allowed you to quietly wash my organization's money through this legitimate corporate entity,
I sincerely thought we had formed a mutually beneficial and highly respectful partnership."
Richard opened his dry mouth to speak,
but absolutely no sound came out of his trembling throat,
his arrogant corporate facade completely and utterly destroyed by the sudden arrival of the true king of Chicago.
"But you became incredibly greedy,
my foolish friend,"
Ethan continued coldly,
taking a slow and highly deliberate step closer to the terrified executive vice president.
"You started secretly creating fake freight companies,
routing massive amounts of my personal wealth into your hidden offshore accounts,
and you actually thought a humble janitor sweeping your floors would never notice the missing millions."
I stood quietly in the very corner of the massive boardroom,
my heart pounding frantically and painfully against my fragile ribs,
watching in absolute shock as the most powerful executive in my company was reduced to a weeping and pathetic mess.
The sheer power dynamic in the room had shifted so violently and completely,
that the very air inside the glass walls felt incredibly heavy,
thick with unspoken threats and the terrifying promise of absolute ruin.
"Mister Moretti,
I can explain everything,"
Richard finally choked out weakly,
tears of pure and unadulterated terror welling up rapidly in his desperate eyes.
"It was merely a temporary accounting error,
a completely harmless financial oversight that I was planning to correct this very afternoon."
Ethan actually laughed loudly,
a dark,
booming,
and incredibly terrifying sound that made every single person in the room flinch simultaneously.
"An accounting error,"
Ethan repeated mockingly,
turning his head slowly to look directly at me with a soft and unexpectedly warm smile.
"I believe my newly appointed chief financial officer,
Miss Claire Morgan,
already proved beyond any reasonable doubt that your actions were entirely intentional and highly malicious."
I gasped softly in pure shock,
May you like
my eyes widening rapidly as I realized Ethan had just publicly promoted me,
elevating me instantly from a lowly accounts payable specialist to the absolute top of the corporate hierarchy in front of everyone.
