Chapter 2 - A Mop, A Warning, and A Threat in the Dark

The rest of the tedious afternoon dragged on endlessly,
feeling like a painful eternity trapped inside a cold glass cage.
I carefully retrieved the printed corporate invoices,
folding them into small and tight squares,
and hiding them securely inside my heavy leather tote bag.
Every single time Richard Hale walked proudly past my department,
my stomach tied itself into agonizing and painful knots.
He was a dangerous corporate predator,
circling his territory with arrogant confidence,
unaware that a lowly accounting specialist had stumbled upon his secret hunting grounds.
By six o'clock in the evening,
the massive office was mostly empty,
abandoned by the exhausted corporate drones fleeing rapidly to their safe suburban homes.
I intentionally stayed at my desk,
pretending to finalize a completely routine expense report,
while my anxious mind raced with dangerous and terrifying possibilities.
I desperately needed to know more information,
I needed concrete proof that North Shore Freight Solutions was merely a fake shell company.
As I rapidly typed a specific search query into the restricted corporate database,
the bright fluorescent lights in the main corridor dimmed slightly,
signaling the official start of the lonely night shift.
I distinctly heard the familiar and rhythmic squeak of a yellow mop bucket,
echoing loudly through the desolate and eerie silence of the floor.
Ethan silently appeared at the very edge of my cubicle,
his graying hair and humble disguise seeming almost comical now,
given the fierce and undeniable intensity burning deeply in his dark eyes.
"You are working very late tonight,"
he observed quietly,
leaning his broad shoulders casually against the gray fabric partition.
"So are you,"
I replied quickly,
immediately minimizing my internet browser window to hide my unauthorized research.
He chuckled softly,
a deep,
resonant,
and powerful sound that seemed entirely out of place for a man holding a wet mop.
"Dirt does not ever sleep,
Claire,
and neither do the corrupt people who constantly create it."
I looked up at him,
really looked closely at him for the first time,
noticing the heavy and incredibly expensive silver watch hidden carefully beneath his frayed uniform sleeve.
"Who exactly are you,
Ethan?"
I asked bravely,
my voice trembling with a chaotic mixture of intense fear and overwhelming curiosity.
"I told you this morning,
I am simply the guy who cleans up the messes."
He deliberately took a slow step forward,
his entire demeanor suddenly turning deadly and intensely serious.
"But the massive financial mess you are looking at right now,
is far too big for you to handle alone."
"I have no idea what you are talking about,"
I deflected nervously,
clutching my heavy tote bag even tighter against my body.
"Nearly half a million dollars,
funneled secretly to a fake warehouse in Cicero,
personally authorized by Richard Hale."
My jaw dropped open in pure shock,
as he flawlessly recited the exact and highly classified details of the invoices I had found.
"How in the world do you know that?"
I gasped loudly,
feeling a freezing chill run rapidly down my entire spine.
"Because it is my money,
Claire,"
he stated calmly,
his dark eyes turning completely cold and terrifyingly unforgiving.
"And Richard Hale is foolishly stealing it directly from me."
I sat frozen in my ergonomic office chair,
unable to comprehend the gravity of his dangerous confession.

The quiet janitor was not merely an observant employee,
he was the true and violent owner of the stolen funds.
