Chapter 3 - The silent ledger

The absolute chaos that descended upon Vanguard Holdings was managed with brutal, synchronized precision. Victoria operated from her high-security executive war room, a windowless bunker beneath the corporate headquarters illuminated by the cool blue light of dozens of massive server monitors. Blair stood beside her, coordinating with a team of elite cyber-security architects who were frantically trying to isolate the malware Ethan had unleashed from the federal holding facility.
"He used the encrypted financial ledgers we handed to the FBI as a trojan horse," Blair explained, her fingers flying across a holographic keyboard. "The moment the federal agents plugged the drive into their secure network to verify the embezzlement, the malware piggybacked on their connection, tunneling directly into Vanguard's deepest reserve accounts."
Victoria stood with her arms crossed, her champagne-ivory gown replaced by a sharp, commanding black blazer and tailored trousers. "How much are we losing?"
"It isn't a slow drain. It is a catastrophic purge," the lead security architect reported, his voice trembling. "The algorithm is liquidating our liquid assets and converting them into untraceable cryptocurrency blocks. We are down one point two billion dollars in the last ten minutes."
Victoria’s expression remained terrifyingly neutral. She did not panic. Panic was an emotion for the unprepared. "Sever the physical connection to the primary fiber-optic trunk. Shut down the global grid manually."
"If we do that, we crash the global supply chain systems. We will lose billions in operational revenue," the architect warned.
"Do it," Victoria commanded effortlessly. "I would rather bleed by my own hand than be bled by a parasite."
The architect executed the command. The massive screens in the war room flickered and died, plunging the room into a heavy, suffocating silence. The immediate bleed was stopped, but the damage was catastrophic.
Blair ran a diagnostic on the isolated servers. "We stopped the primary extraction. But Victoria, the money he managed to steal didn't just vanish into a random crypto-tumbler. I managed to trace the initial destination packet before the blackout."
Victoria leaned over the monitor. "Show me."
Blair brought up a complex web of digital routing nodes. "The funds were routed to a private, hyper-secure holding account in Geneva. But the account doesn't belong to a corporation or a shell company. It is registered to a private citizen."
Blair clicked the final node, revealing the encrypted name on the account. Victoria stared at the screen, the color draining from her flawless, sculpted features. Her hazel eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing shock.
The name on the screen was Eleanor Vance.
"Who is Eleanor Vance?" Blair asked, sensing the sudden, drastic shift in Victoria's unyielding composure.
Victoria placed her hand flat on the cool metal desk to steady herself. "Eleanor Vance died twenty-five years ago in a private aviation crash over the Atlantic. She was the founder of Vanguard Holdings." Victoria looked up at Blair, her voice dropping to a haunted whisper. "Eleanor Vance is my mother."
Before Blair could process the impossible revelation, the heavy steel doors of the war room hissed open. Victoria’s chief of security, a towering man with a scarred jawline, stepped into the room.
"Madam Chairwoman," the security chief said grimly. "We have a problem. The FBI transport vehicle moving Ethan Sterling to the federal penitentiary was ambushed on the bridge. The agents are dead. Ethan has vanished."

Victoria stared at the dark monitors. The game had just escalated from corporate espionage to a blood vendetta. Her husband was a ghost, her stolen fortune was sitting in a dead woman's account, and the foundation of her entire reality was beginning to fracture.
"Mobilize the private strike teams," Victoria ordered, her hazel eyes blazing with a newfound, lethal intensity. "We are going to hunt him down."
