Chapter 18 - The Pale Labyrinth

To find the source of the biological spoofing, Victoria severed all ties with the Vance corporate network. She took Julian and descended beneath the streets of Manhattan, utilizing a map of forgotten industrial conduits dating back to the construction of the city's subway network in the early twentieth century.

The trail led beneath the historic campus of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where her family had funded an underground medical research pavilion forty years ago. The facility had supposedly been demolished in 1994, but as Julian cut through a sealed vault door behind an abandoned utility substation, they found a fully operational, pressurized bioscience corridor.

The air smelled of antiseptic and ozone. Glass observation rooms lined the hallway, containing rows of empty incubation pods and neurological monitoring rigs identical to the one tracking her in Brooklyn.

"Julian, secure the perimeter," Victoria commanded as she approached the central data terminal.

"There is no perimeter to secure, Chairwoman," Julian replied smoothly.

Victoria stopped. The tone of his voice was completely devoid of the deferential loyalty he had displayed for the past three weeks. She turned slowly.

Julian was standing near the door, his weapon lowered, but his stance completely relaxed. He was not aiming at her, but he was blocking the only exit.

"You knew about this facility," Victoria said softly, piecing the puzzle together in real-time. "You didn't bring me here. You guided me here."

"I was assigned to your perimeter twelve years ago, Victoria," Julian said, his voice even, entirely free of malice. "My contract was never with Vance Global. My contract was with the Circle. My mandate was simple: eliminate external threats that were not part of the calibration, and ensure you reached this room when your psychological stress threshold hit maximum capacity."

Victoria felt no rage, only an ice-cold focus. "And what happens now, Julian? Do you put a bullet in the prototype?"

"No," Julian said, stepping aside and pointing toward the massive steel bulkhead at the end of the corridor. "The prototype either breaks or claims the mantle. She is waiting for you inside."
