Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum Beneath the Rafters

The sound of breaking glass downstairs shattered the fragile tension in the cramped attic room.
Heavy boots crunched on the shattered antiques and porcelain figurines scattered across the ground floor of Mrs.
Whitaker’s shop.
“Clear the first floor!” a harsh,
unfamiliar voice shouted from below with ruthless military precision.
“Check the back rooms and the stairwell!” The Calloways had arrived in force.
Declan stood up instantly,
pulling the slide of his firearm back with a sharp,
metallic click that echoed loudly in the confined space.
He turned to me,
his face carved from dark granite,
his eyes burning with absolute lethal resolve.
“Stay behind the brick chimney,
” he instructed in a low,
fierce whisper,
his gaze piercing through me.
“Do not make a sound,
Amelia.
If the door opens,
you go through the fire escape window into the alley behind the barn.
” “I’m not leaving you here to die,
Declan!” I hissed,
grabbing his sleeve with trembling fingers.
“They have a full hit squad down there.
” Declan looked down at my hand gripping his coat sleeve,
a faint,
bittersweet smile touching the corners of his lips.
He reached up,
gently pressing his thumb against my cheek,
wiping away a stray tear.
“I survived the brutal streets of South Chicago when I was twelve years old,
Amelia.
A few Calloway thugs aren’t going to take me down easily.
Not when I finally found my way back to you.
” He gently pried my fingers loose,
turning toward the wooden door just as heavy footsteps began pounding up the stairs with reckless fury.
