Chapter 13 - A Hospital in Knoxville and a Mother’s Desperate Prayer

Back in the secure mountain lodge,

the stress and trauma of the past twenty-four hours finally took a heavy,

devastating toll on my body.

At three in the morning,

a sharp,

terrifying cramp gripped my lower abdomen,

doubling me over in agony.

I woke up gasping for air,

clutching the bedsheets in sheer panic as a wave of hot pain radiated through my spine.

“Declan!” I cried out,

my voice breaking as hot tears streamed down my face.

Within seconds,

Declan was by my side,

turning on the bedside lamp,

his face instantly draining of all color.

“What is it?” he asked,

his voice trembling for the first time in his life.

“The baby,

” I sobbed,

gripping his arm with frantic,

desperate strength.

“Something’s terribly wrong.

” Without a single second of hesitation,

Declan swept me up into his strong arms,

wrapping a heavy woolen blanket around my shivering body,

and carried me out to the waiting SUV.

“Gavin!” he roared into his comm-link with terrifying urgency.

“Clear the private airstrip right now! We’re flying to the top trauma hospital in Knoxville immediately!” During the tense,

terrifying helicopter ride through the dark mountain skies,

Declan held my hand so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.

He kept his other hand pressed firmly against my stomach,

whispering frantic,

broken prayers to a God he had stopped believing in decades ago when he first entered the underworld.
