Chapter 14 - Declan’s Vow Against His Own Blood

The emergency room door finally swung open,
and an exhausted obstetrician stepped into the sterile hallway.
Declan was in front of her in a single,
blurring stride,
his hands gripping the doctor’s shoulders with terrifying intensity.
“Is she alright?” he demanded,
his voice trembling with raw fear.
“Is my baby alive?” The doctor blinked in shock at the sheer ferocity in his eyes,
before offering a reassuring,
exhausted smile to calm him.
“She’s experiencing severe stress-induced exhaustion and threatened pre-term labor,
Mr.
Voss,
” the doctor answered quickly and professionally.
“We administered intravenous fluids and stabilizing medication to stop the contractions.
The baby’s heartbeat is strong and steady again.
She’s going to be fine,
but she needs absolute bed rest and zero stress for the remainder of the pregnancy.
” Declan closed his eyes,
letting out a long,
shuddering breath that sounded like years of accumulated weight leaving his chest.
He nodded slowly,
stepping past the doctor and walking quietly into my hospital room.
I was lying pale against the white pillows,
an IV drip taped to the back of my hand,
tears still wet on my flushed cheeks.
Declan walked over,
sank slowly to his knees beside the bed,
and pressed his forehead gently against my palm.
“The doctor said our baby is strong,
” he whispered,
his voice thick with overwhelming emotion.
“Stronger than both of us combined in this chaotic world.
