Chapter 5 - The Gala of Deceit

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in shimmering gold light, filled with three hundred of the city’s wealthiest power brokers.
Julian stood on the elevated stage beneath a massive crystal chandelier, looking every inch the victorious young monarch of Wall Street.
Selena stood just half a step behind him, dazzling in a scarlet silk backless gown that attracted every flashbulb in the room.
Julian tapped the microphone with a manicured finger, silencing the murmurs of hedge fund managers, city council members, and journalists.
He cleared his throat with practiced emotional vulnerability, offering an update on his beloved wife Nora’s tragic, unfortunate medical ordeal.
He told the crowd that after a horrific, random home invasion, Nora was currently resting in a private, secluded sanitarium upstate.
He claimed that the emotional trauma had devastated her fragile constitution, requiring an extended period of peace away from the public eye.
He announced that in honor of Nora’s bravery, Vance Holdings was pledging twenty million dollars to a new foundation managed entirely by Selena Cole.
The ballroom erupted into polite, synchronized applause, with patrons nodding approvingly at Julian’s supposed loyalty and unwavering strength.
Before the applause could fade into the background music, the massive carved mahogany doors at the back of the room swung open with a deafening thud.
The room went instantly dead silent as every single head turned toward the entrance to witness the source of the interruption.
I walked through the double doors, flanked on my left by Dr. Caleb Reed and on my right by Marcus Kane carrying a heavy briefcase.
I was not wearing the meek hospital gown Julian had left me in, nor was I draped in the submissive pastels he always favored.
I wore an emerald green velvet gown, tailored meticulously to drape gracefully over my newly rounded belly without hiding my silhouette.
My posture was straight as a steel rod, despite the fierce throbbing in my core where twelve surgical staples held my flesh together.
Every step I took across the polished hardwood floor was measured, deliberate, and resonant in the absolute silence of the hall.
Julian’s knuckles turned bone-white against the podium, the color draining from his cheeks faster than water through a sieve.
Beside him, Selena took a reflexive step backward, her hand flying up to cover her mouth in unmasked, terrifying disbelief.
I walked straight down the center aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before an advancing army that took no prisoners.
I stopped at the very foot of the stage, looking up at my husband through eyes that were entirely devoid of fear, sorrow, or warmth.
I spoke into the lapel microphone pinned to my emerald dress, my voice echoing clearly over the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system.
I told the gathered audience that Julian had been mistaken about my whereabouts, because a survivor did not hide in sanitariums.

I announced that I had come not to celebrate Julian’s generosity, but to inform the shareholders that their chief executive was a criminal monster.
The whispering in the room exploded into a roar of overlapping questions, camera shutters firing frantically like a machine-gun battery in the dark.
