Chapter 4 - The Ally in the Shadows

The door had barely clicked shut behind Selena’s furious exit when Dr. Caleb Reed reappeared, his brow furrowed with deep concern.

He closed the door firmly behind him, pulling the privacy blinds shut to block the view from the nursing station.

Caleb walked over to my bedside, checking the digital readout on the fetal Doppler monitor before resting a hand on the frame.

He told me plainly that he had seen the security footage from the hallway and knew that Julian had brought high-priced corporate attorneys to my bedside.

He asked me directly if Julian was coercing me into concealing a violent felony, his voice carrying an unexpected weight of personal anger.

I studied the surgeon’s face, wondering why a prestigious chief of trauma was investing so much emotional energy into my private domestic disaster.

Caleb seemed to read the suspicion in my eyes, reaching into his white lab coat to pull out an old, faded newspaper clipping.

He placed the yellowed newsprint on my blanket, revealing a headline from seven years ago regarding a hit-and-run death near Columbia University.

The victim had been a young pediatric resident named Claire Reed—Caleb’s younger sister, killed on a rainy Tuesday night.

The primary suspect had been a reckless twenty-four-year-old Julian Vance, driving an unregistered sports car after an elite gala.

However, Julian’s powerful father had buried the police reports, paid off the witnesses, and bought Julian an airtight, unshakeable alibi.

Caleb looked at me with raw, burning determination, stating that he had waited seven long years to see Julian Vance held accountable under the law.

He said that the hospital had attempted to hand over my personal effects—including my smartwatch—to Julian’s legal team two days ago.

Caleb had personally intervened, logging the smartwatch into the hospital’s locked forensic safe under a strict chain of medical custody.

He then pulled an encrypted smartphone from his pocket, dialing a number and putting the device on speakerphone beside my ear.

A deep, gravelly voice answered on the second ring, identifying himself as Marcus Kane, the most ruthless white-collar criminal attorney in the state.

Kane had made a career out of dismantling corporate titans who believed their net worth placed them beyond the reach of the penal code.

I spoke into the speaker, recounting every second of the afternoon Julian drove the paring knife into my flesh over Selena’s manufactured scratch.

I told Kane about the recording stored inside the Voice Memos app on my watch, including Julian’s explicit confession of premeditated murder.

Kane went silent for several seconds on the other end of the line, his breath coming in slow, deliberate exhalations through the receiver.

He told me that if the audio file was intact and possessed an unbroken digital timestamp, Julian had committed attempted murder in the first degree.

Furthermore, because Selena had actively encouraged and planned the violent act, she was legally an accessory before and after the fact.

Kane instructed me not to sign a single piece of paper, not to let Julian suspect that my compliance was a calculated performance.

He told me to allow Julian to believe he had completely silenced me until the annual Vance Holdings charity gala on Thursday night.

That was where Julian intended to announce his total control over the family trust, completely unaware that his executioners were already assembled.
