Chapter 3 - The Triumphant Exit

The courtroom was dead silent,

save for the frantic,

desperate sound of Julian taking short,

panicked breaths.

Eleanor turned her back on him completely,

treating him with the absolute,

unapologetic disgust one might reserve for a crushed,

insignificant insect on the bottom of a shoe.

She walked back to me,

her fierce,

terrifying demeanor melting away instantly,

replaced by a warm,

maternal tenderness that I had desperately craved my entire,

lonely life.

"You are so beautiful,

Clara,"

she whispered,

gently wiping a stray,

salty tear from my pale,

exhausted face.

"You have your father's eyes,

and my stubborn,

unbreakable spirit,

which is the only reason you survived this long,

terrible nightmare."

She unbuttoned her luxurious,

incredibly soft cashmere coat,

wrapping it carefully,

tenderly around my trembling,

freezing shoulders,

ensuring that my large,

pregnant belly was fully protected from the harsh,

cold air of the courtroom.

"We are leaving now,

my darling,"

she declared,

wrapping a strong,

supportive arm around my waist,

holding me up when my weak,

exhausted legs threatened to give out.

Julian suddenly shot out of his chair,

his face contorted in a pathetic,

desperate mask of sheer panic.

"Clara,

wait!"

he begged,

his voice cracking pathetically,

reaching a hand out toward me as if I was his last,

only lifeline.

"You know I love you,

baby,

you know I only did these things to protect our family,

to secure our future!"

Before I could even process his disgusting,

blatant lies,

two of Eleanor's massive,

stone-faced security guards stepped smoothly into his path,

blocking him completely with their broad,

immovable shoulders.

I paused,

turning my head slowly to look at the man who had promised to love me,

protect me,

and cherish me,

only to brutally,

systematically tear my entire life apart.

"You told me I came from nothing,

Julian,"

I said,

my voice surprisingly steady,

strong,

and ringing with a newfound,

unshakeable confidence.

"You told me I was going back to nothing,

and that my son and I would starve,

beg,

and suffer without your precious,

stolen money."

Julian swallowed hard,

sweat pouring down his pale,

terrified face,

his eyes darting frantically between me and the massive,

intimidating guards blocking his path.

"I was angry,

Clara,

I didn't mean it,

I swear on my life I didn't mean a single,

solitary word of it!"

I let out a soft,

humorless laugh,

shaking my head at his pathetic,

transparent cowardice.

"You are nothing,

Julian,"

I whispered,

though the acoustics of the quiet,

stunned courtroom carried my voice clearly to every single,

listening ear.

"And when my mother is finished with you,

you won't even have the clothes on your pathetic,

lying back."

With those final,

devastating words,

I turned away,

leaning comfortably against my newly found,

immensely powerful mother,

as we walked gracefully down the center aisle.

The heavy wooden doors were held open by respectful,

bowing guards,

and as we stepped out into the bright,

sunlit hallway,

I heard Judge Carter's gavel slam down heavily,

followed immediately by the frantic,

screaming arguments of Julian and his panicking,

overwhelmed lawyer.

I closed my eyes for a brief,

peaceful second,

breathing in the fresh,

clean air,

knowing that my terrible,

May you like

painful past was finally,

permanently behind me.
