Chapter 20 - The Bloodline Testament

We returned to the estate late that evening under an escort of total silence.

The nursery upstairs was filled with the soft, comforting sounds of bedtime stories.

Noah, Ethan, Grace, and Lily were safe in their beds, completely oblivious to the federal firestorm that had just consumed their father’s dynasty in Manhattan.

I sat at the mahogany desk in my private study, looking at the black envelope Marcus had handed me.

The seal was made of hardened black wax, stamped with a seal that did not belong to the Whitmore family.

It belonged to the Vance family heraldry—the crest of my late father, Arthur Vance.

Marcus stood by the fireplace, his arms crossed, staring into the flickering embers.

Rachel poured three glasses of water, her hands steady, but her eyes filled with an unspoken dread.

"Alistair had this in his inner coat pocket," Marcus said, his voice low and heavy.

"It was taken from our father’s estate safe twenty years ago, right after Arthur Vance died in that suspicious car crash in Geneva."

"Why would Alistair Whitmore have our father’s personal testament?" I asked, my fingers hesitating over the wax seal.

"Because Arthur Vance didn't die of an accident, Evelyn," Marcus said, turning to look at me.

"He died running away from Jonathan Whitmore."

With a sharp snap, I broke the wax seal and pulled out the yellowed document inside.

The letter was dated August 14, 2004, written in my father’s precise, elegant handwriting:

*To my beloved daughter, Evelyn,*

*If you are reading this, it means the Whitmore family has finally tracked you down.*

*When you married Julian, I prayed to God that it was an innocent coincidence—that Julian genuinely loved you for who you were, and not because of the blood that runs through your veins.*

*Jonathan Whitmore built his empire on a lie.*

*In 1952, Jonathan was not the founder of Whitmore Holdings; he was the junior corporate trustee for the Vance Continental Corporation.*

*During the financial collapse, Jonathan forged the founding charters, embezzled the Vance family treasury, and renamed the conglomerate under his own dynasty.*

*He hunted down my brothers. He bankrupted our cousins.*

*I took you and Marcus into hiding under an assumed family name to protect your lives.*

*The Whitmore wealth does not belong to Julian.*

*It does not belong to Alistair.*

*Every single brick, every share, every patent belongs legally and ancestrally to you, Evelyn.*

*And the quadruplets you carry do not carry the Whitmore bloodline as a burden...*

*They are the rightful, sole hereditary owners of the Vance Continental Empire.*

*Beware of Julian’s mother, Eleanor.*

*She knows the truth.*

*And she will do whatever it takes to ensure the Vance bloodline never claims its throne.*

My hands trembled violently as the letter fell onto the desk.

The entire foundation of my life spun wildly off its axis.

My marriage to Julian.

The cruelty of his mother, Eleanor, who had constantly humiliated me, calling me a "penniless orphan from nowhere" who didn't deserve the Whitmore name.

She hadn't despised me because I was poor.

She had despised me because she knew that if the truth ever came to light, I was the rightful owner of everything she possessed!

Suddenly, the study’s landline phone rang.

The sharp, shrill ring pierced the heavy silence like a gunshot.

Rachel jumped.

Marcus immediately stepped forward, pressing the speakerphone button.

"Hello?" Marcus demanded.

A frantic, breathless voice came over the speaker—the head administrator from the specialized memory care hospice in Palm Beach, Florida.

"Is this Ms. Evelyn Vance?" the administrator gasped, sirens wailing loudly in the background.

"Yes! What’s happening?" I demanded, leaning over the desk.

"It’s Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore," the administrator cried out above the noise of shouting medical staff and roaring alarms.

"Her room caught fire fifteen minutes ago!"

"The dementia... it was an act, Ms. Vance!"

"She incapacitated two of our private security guards and breached the north wing exit!"

"Before she fled in a black sedan waiting at the perimeter, she left a handwritten message scrawled on her bathroom mirror in red lipstick!"

My heart stopped beating.

"What did the message say?" I whispered, cold terror seizing every muscle in my body.

May you like

The administrator inhaled sharply, her voice trembling with sheer horror.

"It said: *'I killed Arthur Vance twenty years ago to build this empire. Tonight, I am coming to New York to finish the rest of his bloodline.'*"
