Chapter 16 - The Ambush in the Dark

The harsh glare of the tactical flashlight blinded Rachel as she reached the edge of the duct.
"Don't shoot!" Rachel called out, shielding her eyes.
Two strong hands reached into the shaft, grabbed Rachel by the shoulders, and hauled her out into the corridor.
I scrambled forward immediately, my adrenaline surging, ready to claw and fight whoever was waiting on the other side.
I dropped onto the concrete floor of the sub-basement, rolling instantly to my feet and raising my fists.
"Stand down, Evelyn!" a calm, deep voice ordered.
I blinked against the light.
Standing before us was not Alistair Whitmore, nor his private mercenaries.
It was Marcus Vance—my estranged older brother, whom I hadn't seen since the day I married Julian seven years ago.
Marcus stood over six feet tall, dressed in dark tactical gear, flanked by three private security operatives wearing the insignia of Vance Maritime.
"Marcus...?" I breathed, my voice trembling with sudden, overwhelming shock.
Marcus lowered his flashlight, his weathered face softening just a fraction as he looked at me.
"You always did know how to find the most dangerous rooms in Manhattan, little sister," Marcus said quietly.
Behind me, Julian tumbled out of the vent, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor, coughing violently from the dust.
Marcus’s eyes shifted from me to Julian, and the warmth in his face instantly vanished, replaced by pure, Arctic hostility.
Before Julian could stand, Marcus stepped forward, grabbed Julian by his soaked lapels, and slammed him hard against the stone wall.
"One word, Whitmore," Marcus growled, his knuckles pressing into Julian’s throat.
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't leave you in this basement to rot after what you put my sister through."
"Marcus, stop!" I commanded, stepping between them and placing a firm hand on my brother's chest.
Julian didn't resist.
He didn't fight back.
He raised his bruised hands slightly and looked Marcus dead in the eyes.
"He’s right, Evelyn," Julian rasped, struggling to breathe.
"I deserve whatever he wants to do to me."
"You don't get to die that easily, Julian," Marcus spat, shoving Julian back against the wall before releasing his grip.
Marcus turned back to me, his jaw tight.
"How did you find us?" I asked, wiping dust from my coat.
"I’ve had a surveillance team watching Alistair since he landed at JFK two days ago," Marcus explained, holstering his tactical light.
"When our father died, he warned me that Jonathan Whitmore's old debts would eventually bubble to the surface."
"I knew the moment Julian folded his hand and gave you the shares, Alistair would strike."
"My men tracked Alistair’s private detail to this bank thirty minutes ago."
"They cut the vault's external power and locked the emergency pins from the outside."
"We breached the rear service entrance to pull you out."
"What time is it?" I asked urgently, checking my dead phone screen.
"It’s 4:30 in the morning," Marcus said grimly.
"Alistair’s legal team has already filed an emergency ex parte petition at the Manhattan Family Courthouse."
"The hearing is scheduled for 8:30 AM."
"He’s asking Judge Harrison—a man Alistair has had in his pocket for a decade—to grant an immediate writ of protective custody over Noah, Ethan, Grace, and Lily."
"Over my dead body," I snarled, every maternal instinct in my body flaring into raw fury.
"We have three hours," Rachel said, checking her wristwatch.
"We need to get back to the estate, secure the children, and present the Cayman Island documents proving Vanessa Blake was Alistair’s paid agent."
"That won't be enough to stop Judge Harrison," Julian spoke up, his voice raspy but clear.
We all turned to look at him.
Julian pulled a small, silver thumb drive from the lining of his torn coat.
"What is that?" Marcus demanded, eyeing him suspiciously.
"It’s the audio recordings from Vanessa’s final confession before she was transferred to the state penitentiary," Julian said, his eyes burning with vengeance.
"She admitted that Alistair provided the forged medical documents used to declare Evelyn unfit during our divorce."
"She named the judge, the offshore accounts, and the exact sums paid."
Julian held the drive out toward Marcus.
"I was saving it to save my own skin," Julian admitted softly.
"Now, use it to destroy my uncle."
Marcus looked at the drive, then looked at me.

"Let's move," Marcus commanded.
"We’re going to war."
