Chapter 14 - Cold Steel and Dark Secrets

The pitch-black darkness of the vault was instant and claustrophobic.
Rachel inhaled sharply, her hand instantly finding my arm.
"Don't move," I commanded calmly, though my pulse thundered in my ears.
Julian’s voice rose in panic.
"The emergency release is by the door frame!" he shouted, stumbling in the dark against the steel tables.
A loud metallic crash echoed as Julian knocked over a brass tray.
"Calm down, Julian!" I ordered, pulling out my smartphone and flicking on the flashlight beam.
The harsh white light cut through the gloom, illuminating Julian on his hands and knees on the cold concrete floor.
He looked utterly stripped of the billionaire prestige he had commanded for a decade.
He looked like a cornered animal realizing the trap had closed around him months ago.
I swung the flashlight beam toward the heavy steel door.
The internal emergency dial had been physically snapped off from the outside; jagged metal edges protruded where the turn-wheel should have been.
"We’re locked in," Rachel said, her voice tight and analytical.
"The air filtration in these historical vaults operates on a twelve-hour cycle."
"If the power is cut, we have roughly six hours of breathable oxygen."
Julian crawled to his feet, slamming his fists against the four-inch-thick steel door.
"Hey!" Julian roared, his voice cracking against the unyielding metal.
"Open this door! Alistair, you bastard, I know you're out there!"
"Save your breath, Julian," I said, walking slowly over to the center pedestal where the open lockbox still sat.
"Alistair didn't lock us in here to kill us."
"If he wanted us dead, he would have blown the building or caused an accident on the road."
"He locked us in here to buy time."
"Time for what?" Julian gasped, leaning his forehead against the freezing door.
"Time to execute the court order while we are unreachable," Rachel realized, pulling out her phone.
"No signal. The vault walls are lined with lead and reinforced concrete."
"By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Alistair’s legal team will present that forged signature to a family court judge."
"They will claim Julian has gone missing, Evelyn Vance is uncooperative, and the quadruplets are in urgent need of state custody pending the asset audit."
The thought of state troopers arriving at my home, pulling Noah, Ethan, Grace, and Lily from their beds while strangers poked and prodded them for headlines, ignited a terrifying fire inside me.
"We are not staying here for six hours," I said, my voice dead and lethal.
I pointed my light back at the black steel box.
Beneath the ledger Julian had pulled, a smaller wooden compartment was visible.
I walked over, grabbed the wooden divider, and ripped it up.
Beneath it lay a thick manila folder labeled with a single name: *VANESSA BLAKE.*
Julian turned around, his eyes widening in shock.
"Vanessa? What is her file doing in my grandfather’s vault?"
"Your grandfather died before Vanessa even entered your life, Julian," Rachel noted, stepping closer.
"Which means someone else put this here recently."
I opened the folder.
Inside were bank transfer receipts, flight itineraries from five years ago, and personal checks signed by Alistair Whitmore.
Every single payment was made directly to Vanessa Blake’s private offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
Julian stared at the documents, his jaw trembling, his eyes glassy with an agonizing comprehension.
"Vanessa... was Alistair's plant?" Julian whispered, his legs giving out beneath him.
He collapsed into a chair, burying his head in his hands.
"From the very beginning," I said coldly, turning the pages under the flashlight beam.
"She didn't just target you for your wealth, Julian."
"Alistair hired her years ago to destroy our marriage, alienate you from me, produce fake heirs, and drive Whitmore Holdings into administrative paralysis."
May you like
"You didn't just throw me away for a mistress, Julian."
"You threw your family away for a hired corporate assassin."
