Chapter 12 - The Patriarch in the Shadows

Alistair Whitmore hung up without waiting for a reply.

The dial tone buzzed in the quiet study like an angry hornet.

Rachel and I stood in silence, the weight of the phone call suffocating the room.

Alistair was a ghost story within the Whitmore household during the years I had been married to Julian.

Julian had rarely spoken of him, and when he did, it was always with a strange mixture of disgust and genuine dread.

Alistair was the eldest brother of Julian’s father, exiled twenty-five years ago for ruthless financial fraud and hostile internal sabotage.

Old Jonathan Whitmore had bought him out, banished him to Singapore, and sealed his name out of public company records.

Julian had believed his uncle was dead or powerless.

Clearly, neither was true.

Alistair had simply been waiting in the dark for Julian to make an irreparable mistake.

And Julian’s absolute surrender of his corporate crown was the exact mistake Alistair needed.

"We need to lock down the estate," Rachel said immediately, dialing our head of security.

"If Alistair is moving legally, he’ll also be moving socially."

"He’s going to use the media to drag the children into the open."

"He won't touch my children," I said, my voice dropping into absolute resolve.

"I didn't survive Vanessa Blake's venom and Julian's blindness just to let an exiled vulture pick at my family."

"What's our first move?" Rachel asked, shutting her laptop and looking at me with total loyalty.

"We call Julian," I said.

Rachel blinked in disbelief.

"Julian? Evelyn, he just gave up. He’s completely broken."

"He’s broken because he thinks he solved everything," I replied, picking up my phone.

"He needs to know that his grand gesture just handed his grandfather’s empire to a monster."

"And Julian knows Alistair’s legal weaknesses better than anyone alive."

I dialed the number Julian had used earlier that afternoon.

It rang twice before he picked up.

"Evelyn?" His voice sounded weary, almost frail, entirely devoid of the arrogant billionaire swagger he once wore like armor.

"Did you read Clause 17-B of your grandfather's foundational charter before handing me those papers?" I asked coldly.

There was a heavy pause on the line.

"Clause 17-B?" Julian repeated, confusion dripping from his words.

"That was voided twenty years ago when my father took full control."

"It wasn't voided, Julian," I said, my voice slicing through his ignorance.

"It was held in escrow under an offshore nominee account."

"Your uncle Alistair just called my personal phone."

"He’s in the country, Julian."

"And by signing those shares over to the children's trust, you triggered an automatic seizure of Whitmore Holdings by Alistair's board."

A sudden, violent gasp came over the phone.

I could hear glass shattering in the background—Julian had dropped whatever he was holding.

"Alistair...?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking.

"No. No, that’s impossible. Alistair was legally disbarred from claiming succession."

"He found a loophole, Julian," I snapped.

"And tomorrow morning, he’s filing a public motion to demand a court-ordered genetic audit of our quadruplets."

"He wants to put four toddlers on a witness stand to prove they aren't corporate instruments."

"I’m coming over," Julian said instantly, terror and fury igniting his tone.

"Do not come to my house," I commanded.

"You forfeited the right to step through my front door."

"Then meet me at the family archives in Manhattan tonight," Julian pleaded.

"My grandfather kept a private vault beneath the original bank building on Wall Street."

"If there is any codicil that cancels Alistair's rights, it’s locked in that safe."

I looked at Rachel.

Rachel nodded slowly, reading the gravity of the gamble.

"Ten o'clock tonight," I told Julian.

"If you are playing another game, Julian, I swear to God you will regret it for the rest of your life."

May you like

"I have no games left, Evelyn," Julian whispered.

"I only want to save what is left of our children's future."
