Chapter 6 - Summoning the Board of Directors

While Trevor was being hauled away in federal custody for processing,

the emergency board of directors meeting at Hayes Enterprises was descending into absolute chaos.

The magnificent glass boardroom on the fiftieth floor of downtown Phoenix overlooked the sprawling desert,

but nobody was looking at the view.

Eleanor Hayes sat at the head of the polished obsidian table,

her knuckles white as she gripped a stack of emergency legal injunctions.

Surrounding her were the senior partners,

the chief financial officers,

and the external legal counsel of the firm,

all of them shouting over one another in a panic.

How did the Department of Justice get their hands on these ledgers?

demanded Mr. Henderson,

the senior partner who had served the family for forty years.

These documents contain encrypted routing numbers that only executive-level management was supposed to have access to!

Eleanor slammed her hand down on the table,

silencing the room with sheer, unadulterated venom.

Shut your mouth, Henderson,

and stop acting like a headless chicken.

We need to find out who leaked this data from the inside.

The heavy boardroom doors pushed open smoothly,

and Marcus Vance walked in,

uninvited,

flanked by two armed federal bailiffs and carrying a sleek leather briefcase.

He didn't wait to be announced.

He strode right down the center of the room,

stopping just ten feet away from Eleanor’s seat.

You don't need to look for an anonymous leaker, Mrs. Hayes,

Marcus announced,

his voice echoing off the glass walls.

I am here representing the actual whistle-blower.

Eleanor stood up slowly,

her eyes narrowing into poisonous daggers as she stared down the attorney.

Marcus Vance.

I should have known you were behind this ambulance-chasing stunt.

How much do you want to drop this investigation?

Name your price, Mr. Vance.

Ten million?

Fifty million?

The Hayes family has deep pockets,

and we can make you very wealthy.

Marcus let out a dry, humorless laugh,

opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a certified legal document bearing the official seal of the Arizona Supreme Court.

You still don't understand the gravity of your situation, do you, Eleanor?

This isn't about blackmail,

and it certainly isn't about money.

This is about total legal liquidation.

Marcus tossed a thick stack of papers onto the obsidian table,

scattering copies across the polished surface for every board member to see.

These are forensic accounting audits compiled by a certified corporate accountant over the past thirty-six months.

They detail systematic fraud,

tax evasion,

money laundering,

and deliberate breach of fiduciary trust committed by Trevor Hayes and approved by executive oversight.

Henderson picked up one of the pages,

his eyes scanning the numbers before turning completely pale.

My God,

he whispered,

letting the paper slip from his trembling fingers.

Every single transaction listed here is backed by digital signatures from Trevor's private terminal.

And look at the signature on the whistleblower petition,

Marcus added smoothly,

pointing a finger at the very last page of the document.

Eleanor’s gaze dropped to the bottom of the page.

There,

clear as day,

written in elegant, precise cursive,

was my full name:

Elena Marie Hayes.

Eleanor staggered backward,

her knees hitting her executive chair as the room spun around her.

That insignificant girl,

Eleanor choked out,

her voice trembling with rage and disbelief.

That quiet, obedient nobody...

She was an auditor the entire time,

Marcus finished for her,

snapping his briefcase shut with a sharp click.

And now,

by virtue of the late Arthur Hayes's inheritance morality clause and federal whistleblower protection laws,

she is the court-appointed receiver and majority stakeholder of all remaining unencumbered Hayes Enterprises assets.

The board members sat in paralyzed shock,

realizing that the mighty Hayes empire had just been dismantled from the inside out by the very person they had spent three years treating like a servant.
