Chapter 15 - The Settlement Offer They Thought Was a Joke

Two weeks before the scheduled federal criminal trial,

a desperate plea for a plea bargain landed on Marcus Vance’s desk.

Trevor’s new public defender,

realizing that conviction was absolute and federal prison time was guaranteed,

submitted a formal settlement proposal.

In exchange for dropping all civil lawsuits and reducing criminal referral recommendations,

Trevor and Eleanor offered to surrender their remaining personal jewelry,

luxury vehicles,

and a fraction of an offshore retirement account—amounting to roughly two million dollars—to settle all claims.

Marcus called me into his office to review the proposal,

laughing aloud as he tossed the document onto his desk.

Can you believe the audacity of these people?

Marcus shook his head in disbelief.

They spent three years treating you like a penniless servant,

and now they think they can buy their way out of twenty years in federal prison with pocket change and secondhand Rolex watches.

I picked up the settlement document,

flipped through the pages with unhurried indifference,

and tossed it neatly into the recycling bin beside the desk.

Tell them the offer is rejected, Marcus,

I said calmly.

I don't want their jewelry,

and I certainly don't want their pocket change.

Let the federal judge decide what their arrogance is truly worth.

Marcus grinned,

picking up his phone to relay the rejection to the prosecution team.

Consider it done.

By the afternoon,

word of the rejected settlement leaked to the financial press,

causing yet another wave of humiliating headlines for the disgraced family.

The Hayes name,

once synonymous with untouchable power and aristocratic wealth in Arizona,

had become a universal cautionary tale about corporate greed and domestic abuse.

Eleanor Hayes,

sitting in her high-security holding cell,

reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown when she realized her precious legacy had been completely vaporized by the very daughter-in-law she had despised.

Trevor,

meanwhile,

sat in his cell with his ankle monitor buzzing softly,

finally comprehending the full, devastating magnitude of what he had thrown away at four-thirty in the morning while making coffee in his parents' kitchen.

He had thought he was stripping me of everything.

May you like

Instead,

he had accidentally handed me the keys to the entire kingdom.
