Chapter 13 - The Custody Battle for Our Son Begins

Realizing that his financial empire was completely gone and prison walls were closing in around him,

Trevor made one final, desperate maneuver through his remaining defense counsel:

he filed an emergency motion for sole custody of our two-month-old son.

His legal team argued that as a newly single mother with no traditional corporate job and living in temporary housing,

I was unstable and financially incapable of providing a proper upbringing for a Hayes heir.

The family court hearing was scheduled for Friday morning in the downtown municipal courthouse.

I walked into the courtroom wearing a sharp, tailored navy blue pantsuit that commanded absolute authority,

my baby resting peacefully in a sleek designer stroller.

Marcus Vance walked beside me,

carrying a leather portfolio stuffed with character references,

bank solvency certificates,

and court-appointed receivership documents.

Across the aisle sat Trevor,

looking even more broken than before,

flanked by a court-appointed public defender since he could no longer afford his high-priced private attorneys.

Judge Katherine Alvarez,

a notoriously strict family court magistrate known for her zero-tolerance policy on parental manipulation,

sat on the bench with a stern expression.

The court will now hear arguments in the custody matter of Hayes v. Hayes,

Judge Alvarez announced,

her voice sharp and commanding.

Mr. Trevor Hayes,

your legal team has submitted a petition claiming that the mother is financially unstable and unfit to retain custody.

You may present your argument.

Trevor’s public defender stood up nervously,

adjusting his tie before speaking.

Your Honor, my client maintains that as a prominent member of the community—

Interrupted sharply,

Judge Alvarez raised her hand,

stopping the lawyer mid-sentence.

Counsel,

let us dispense with romanticized notions of prominence.

Your client is currently under federal indictment for multi-million-dollar fraud and money laundering,

facing up to twenty years in prison,

and is currently wearing a court-mandated ankle monitor.

How, exactly, does that qualify him as a stable guardian?

Trevor stood up from the defense table,

his voice cracking with manufactured desperation.

Your Honor!

She’s vengeful!

She plotted behind my back for three years,

she stole control of my family’s company,

and she walked out of my house with my son just to punish me!

Judge Alvarez stared down at Trevor with unmasked disgust.

Mr. Hayes,

the mother walked out of your house because you handed her a divorce at four-thirty in the morning while she was holding an infant and making breakfast for your ungrateful family,

convinced you had stripped her of everything.

According to the forensic financial records currently in possession of this court,

not only is Mrs. Hayes completely solvent,

she is the court-appointed majority trustee of all remaining Hayes assets,

making her financially wealthier than your entire lineage combined.

The public defender quietly sat back down,

realizing there was nothing left to argue.

Judge Alvarez picked up her wooden gavel,

her eyes locking directly onto Trevor.

Petition for sole custody by the father is denied with prejudice.

Full, unencumbered legal and physical custody is hereby awarded permanently to the mother,

Elena Marie Hayes.

Trevor collapsed back into his chair,

burying his face in his hands as quiet, bitter tears streamed down his cheeks.

I didn't look back at him as I wheeled my son out of the courtroom,

knowing that justice had finally balanced the scales.
