Chapter 5 - Ruth’s Kitchen Sanctuary and the Quiet War Room

The heavy wooden front door of Ruth’s cottage shuddered under the force of violent, hammering knocks.
Trevor’s muffled voice echoed through the thin panels,
frantic and demanding.
Elena!
Open this door right now!
I know you're in there!
Don't be a coward!
Ruth gripped her walking cane tightly,
her eyes flashing with protective anger.
The nerve of that arrogant little monster,
Ruth muttered under her breath,
stepping toward the entryway.
Shall I break his nose with this cane if he steps one foot inside my house?
I placed a gentle hand on Ruth’s forearm,
shaking my head with a calm, serene smile.
Save your energy, Ruth.
Violence is beneath us,
and besides,
federal marshals are already tracking his cell phone signal.
The banging stopped abruptly,
replaced by the sound of the brass doorknob rattling violently.
When Trevor realized the door was bolted from the inside,
his voice shifted from arrogant commands to desperate pleading.
Elena,
please open up.
We can talk about this like adults.
You can't just up and leave with my son over a stupid disagreement.
I walked into the small hallway,
balancing my baby securely against my chest,
and stared through the frosted glass panel of the front door.
I could see Trevor’s distorted shadow pacing back and forth on the porch,
his expensive hair disheveled,
his tie completely untied.
A disagreement, Trevor?
I called out clearly through the wood,
my voice devoid of any emotion.
Is that what you call a multi-million-dollar federal embezzlement scheme?
A simple disagreement?
Silence fell on the other side of the door.
Trevor froze,
his breathing heavy and ragged.
How...
how do you know about that?
he whispered,
his voice cracking with sudden dread.
Because I’m the one who handed the ledgers to Marcus Vance this morning,
I replied evenly.
And right about now,
your mother is probably staring at a stack of freeze warrants delivered by the Department of Justice.
Open the damn door, Elena!
Trevor roared,
slamming his fist against the wood once more.
You are destroying our family!
You are destroying everything we built!
You built nothing, Trevor,
I countered,
my tone hardening like steel.
You inherited a legacy,
squandered it on vanity and illegal schemes,
and treated everyone around you like disposable servants.
Well,
your service staff has officially resigned.
Before Trevor could scream another threat,
the sound of flashing blue and red lights painted the quiet suburban street in brilliant shades of crimson and azure.
Two federal black-and-white SUVs pulled up directly behind Trevor’s Mercedes,
blocking him in completely.
Four armed federal marshals stepped out of the vehicles,
their tactical vests clearly marked,
their faces grim and professional.
Mr. Trevor Hayes?
the lead marshal called out,
walking up the porch steps and placing a heavy hand on Trevor’s shoulder.
You need to come with us.
Trevor tried to twist away,
his face turning purple with rage and panic.
Do you know who my family is?
You can't touch me!
My mother owns half the judges in this state!
The lead marshal didn't even flinch,
pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt with practiced ease.
Your mother's influence just expired, Mr. Hayes.
Turn around and place your hands behind your back.
Through the frosted glass,
I watched the man who had once treated me like a worthless piece of furniture get shoved against the hood of his own luxury car,
the cold steel cuffs snapping shut around his wrists.
Ruth peeked through the lace curtains of the living room,
letting out a long, satisfying breath.
Well, Elena.
That has got to be the most beautiful morning television I have ever witnessed.
I smiled down at my baby,
who continued to sleep peacefully through the entire ordeal.
May you like
It's only the opening credits, Ruth.
The real show is about to begin.
