Chapter 6 - The Ledger of Betrayal

The bright fluorescent lights of the state police interrogation room burned into my eyes as I sat opposite Detective Rodriguez,

a hardened investigator with thirty years of experience on the force.

Claire sat beside me,

her shoulder wrapped in a warm blanket provided by the paramedic who had treated her minor injuries at the scene.

On the metal table between us lay the black leather folder Claire had saved from Eleanor's frantic destruction.

Detective Rodriguez opened the folder with gloved hands,

his thick eyebrows furrowing deeper with every page he turned.

"This is extraordinary,

"

Rodriguez muttered,

shaking his head in disbelief.

"I've seen dark things in this county,

Mrs.

Vance,

but this is systematic sociopathy.

"

"What does it show,

Detective?"

I asked,

my voice hollow.

"It's not just life insurance policies,

"

Rodriguez explained,

pointing to a series of financial contracts stamped with offshore notary seals.

"Mason took out a short-term loan against a hard-money lender in Macau three months ago.

"

"Five million dollars.

"

"The collateral for the loan was his estate,

his business shares,

and.

.

.

"

Rodriguez paused,

looking up at me with deep sympathy in his dark eyes.

".

.

a payout from a survivorship life insurance policy naming him as sole beneficiary in the event of your accidental death.

"

"Accidental death,

"

I repeated,

the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

"He planned the blizzard trip,

"

Claire interjected,

her voice trembling as she spoke up.

"He told me weeks ago that he had to take Rachel to a mountain cabin to 'work on their marriage' before the divorce.

"

"He specifically waited for the winter storm warning to be issued by the National Weather Service.

"

Rodriguez nodded,

attaching a paperclip to the weather forecast printouts found inside the folder.

"He lured you up Independence Pass on the exact night he knew the gates were being closed due to avalanche danger,

"

Rodriguez said.

"He disabled the passenger door handles,

turned off the heat,

and left you there,

knowing the storm would cover his tracks and make it look like you stalled out and froze before help could arrive.

"

"And Eleanor?"

I asked.

"Eleanor's phone pinged off the cell tower near the summit at eleven forty-five PM that night,

"

Rodriguez revealed.

"She was waiting in her car to pick him up after he walked away from your vehicle.

"

"We have her on tape from a gas station security camera twenty minutes later,

buying two hot coffees and paying in cash.

"

"They didn't even care,

"

Claire sobbed,

covering her face with her trembling hands.

"They sat in that car drinking coffee while Rachel and a nine-day-old baby were dying in the snow!"

I reached over and squeezed Claire's hand tightly.

Six weeks ago,

I thought I was completely alone in the world,

fighting a battle against a wealthy,

powerful family that could crush me like a bug.

Now,

standing in the light of truth,

I realized that the powerful family was nothing more than a house of cards built on lies,

debts,

and cowardice.

"Where is Mason now?"

I asked the detective.

"He's currently being held in the Pitkin County Jail without bail,

"

Rodriguez replied.

"His legal team tried to file an emergency habeas corpus petition,

but given the new evidence in this folder,

the judge locked him down tight.

"

"He's facing charges of attempted premeditated murder,

conspiracy to commit murder,

child endangerment,

and multi-million dollar fraud.

"

"He's going away for a very long time,

Rachel.

"

I let out a long,

shaky breath I felt like I had been holding for six weeks.

"Is it over?"

I whispered.

Rodriguez looked at me,

his expression stern and resolute.

"The criminal part is just starting,

Mrs.

Vance.

"

"You'll have to testify.

"

"You'll have to tell the jury everything that happened on that mountain.

"

I looked down at my hands,

the small scars on my palms from breaking the car window still visible under the bright lights.

"I'll tell them,

"

I said,

my voice growing stronger with every beat of my heart.

May you like

"I'll tell the whole world what Mason Vance did.

"
