Chapter 10 - The Mastermind Unmasked

The revelations about Hannah Miller sent shockwaves through the legal teams on both sides.
Mason’s defense team,
which had been preparing an insane-assault defense claiming Mason suffered a temporary psychotic break due to financial stress on the mountain pass,
was completely shattered by the emergence of a pattern of serial murder for financial gain.
Within forty-eight hours,
federal investigators from the FBI joined the multi-jurisdictional task force,
sifting through fifteen years of Mason and Eleanor Vance's financial records.
What they uncovered was a dark,
twisted web of systematic horror that extended far beyond Aspen and Chicago.
Marcus called me to his office late on a Friday evening,
the room dimly lit by desk lamps as he pointed to a massive whiteboard covered in names,
dates,
and bank account flowcharts.
"It wasn't just Hannah,
"
Marcus said,
his voice barely above a whisper,
filled with deep horror.
"What do you mean?"
I asked,
feeling a cold pit form in my stomach.
"We found three other women,
"
Marcus revealed,
tracing a red line across the board.
"Three other women over the last twelve years who were intimately involved with Mason or his shell companies.
"
"One died in a mysterious house fire in Santa Fe four years ago.
"
"Another died in a hit-and-run accident in Miami eight years ago.
"
"In every single case,
Mason or one of Eleanor's front corporations was named as a partial beneficiary on high-value term life insurance policies!"
I buried my face in my hands,
shuddering at the terrifying magnitude of the evil I had unwittingly brought into my life.
I had slept in the same bed with a serial killer.
I had let him touch me,
hold me,
kiss me,
and father my child,
completely blind to the blood on his hands.
"How did he get away with it for so long?"
I choked out,
tears of horror spilling over my eyelashes.
"Eleanor,
"
Marcus answered firmly,
slapping a photograph of Mason's mother onto the board.
"Eleanor wasn't just an accomplice after the fact.
"
"She was the mastermind,
Rachel.
"
"Eleanor was a former insurance claims adjuster in the nineties before she got fired for ethics violations.
"
"She knew every single loophole in the insurance industry.
"
"She knew how to write policies,
how to structure beneficiaries through offshore trusts,
and how to create 'accidental' death scenarios that wouldn't trigger mandatory fraud investigations!"
"Mason was her hammer,
"
Marcus continued.
"He was the charismatic salesman who wooed the targets,
got them to sign the paperwork,
and executed the physical acts.
"
"She was the brain that managed the payouts and laundered the money through European dummy accounts.
"
"They were a family business of murder.
"
I stood up,
my body trembling with an overwhelming wave of nausea and fury.
"And I was supposed to be number five,
"
I said,
staring at my name written in red marker at the very end of the horrifying timeline.
"You were supposed to be number five,
"
Marcus agreed softly.
"But you survived the mountain,
Rachel.
"
"You broke the glass with your father's hammer.
"
"You walked into that chapel.
"
"And because you refused to die in that blizzard,
you just exposed one of the most prolific financial murder-for-hire schemes in American history.
"
I looked out the window into the dark Colorado night,
watching the distant lights of cars moving safely along the valley highway.
"They aren't just going to prison,
Marcus,
"
I said,
my voice hardening into cold steel.
"They are going to answer for Hannah,
for the woman in Santa Fe,
for the woman in Miami,
and for every life they destroyed.
"
May you like
"I'll make sure of it.
