Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Ring

A year after that fateful day at the ballroom chapel,

Claire and I stood on the rocky overlook atop Independence Pass.

The mountain peak was covered in a pristine blanket of fresh white snow,

shimmering brilliant silver under the clear blue autumn sky.

The cold mountain wind whipped our hair around our faces,

but neither of us felt cold.

We stood together,

wearing thick winter coats,

looking down at the exact spot on the shoulder of Highway 82 where Mason had turned off the ignition and locked the doors almost two years prior.

In my hands,

I held a small wooden box filled with pressed flowers from Hannah Miller's family,

as well as notes of remembrance from the families of the other victims Mason had stolen from over the years.

Claire reached out,

placing a small,

golden key inside the box—the key to the house Mason had bought with stolen money,

which we had successfully sold to fund the safehouse shelter in Denver.

"Are you ready,

Rachel?"

Claire asked softly,

her eyes bright with quiet tears of relief.

"I'm ready,

"

I answered.

Together,

we opened the box and let the wind carry the dried petals and notes out over the vast,

towering canyon below.

We watched them float across the white expanse,

borne upward by the mountain drafts,

disappearing into the pure,

endless sky.

"They're free now,

"

Claire whispered,

wrapping her arm around my shoulders.

"And so are we.

"

I looked up at the towering peaks that had once felt like a terrifying,

frozen prison designed to claim my life.

Now,

standing atop the world with my head high and my soul completely free,

the mountain no longer represented death or fear.

It stood as a monument to resilience.

It was the place where a mother's love proved stronger than the bitterest cold,

where truth broke through the thickest ice,

and where justice finally silenced the cruelest lies.

I turned back toward our SUV parked safely on the side of the road,

where Sarah was sitting inside with baby Lily,

who was happily babbling at a stuffed snow bear through the warm glass window.

I took a deep breath of the crisp,

clean mountain air,

feeling the warmth of my own heart beating strong and steady inside my chest.

"Let me go home,

Claire,

"

I smiled,

stepping away from the ledge.

May you like

"We have a life to live.

"
