Chapter 17 - The Echoes of Healing

Six months after the trial ended,
the crisp air of autumn brought bright red and gold leaves to the high valleys of Colorado.
The national storm surrounding the "Blizzard Killer" trial had finally settled into quiet history,
leaving behind a landscape of restored peace and quiet dignity.
I sat on the wide wooden porch of my new home in Glenwood Springs,
watching nearly one-year-old Lily take her very first trembling,
unassisted steps across the rug toward me.
"Come on,
sweetheart,
"
I laughed softly,
holding my hands out encouragingly.
"You can do it!"
Lily took three tiny,
wobbly steps,
her bright blue eyes wide with excitement,
before tumbling safely into my open arms,
giggling hysterically.
I pulled her close,
kissing her soft,
warm cheek,
feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude wash through my soul.
She was healthy,
happy,
and surrounded by a life built entirely on love,
truth,
and safety.
A quiet car pulled up the gravel driveway,
and Marcus stepped out,
carrying a fresh folder of legal documents and two hot cups of coffee from town.
"Looks like someone is learning to run,
"
Marcus smiled,
walking up the porch steps and handing me a cup.
"She's unstoppable,
"
I smiled,
adjusting Lily on my lap.
"Just like her mother,
"
Marcus said warmly,
taking a seat in the rocking chair beside me.
"I brought the final papers for the Vance Victims Foundation.
"
"The state officially approved the non-profit charter this morning.
"
My heart swelled with pride.
Using a portion of the financial restitution seized from Mason's liquidated accounts,
Claire,
Catherine Miller,
and I had established a foundation dedicated to providing emergency shelter,
legal representation,
and financial security for women and children escaping abusive and fraudulent domestic situations.
"We already have forty applicants for the winter assistance program,
"
Marcus informed me,
sliding the documents across the table for my signature.
"You're changing lives,
Rachel.
"
"You took the darkest night of your life and turned it into a lighthouse for hundreds of people lost in the dark.
"
I signed my name at the bottom of the charter,
watching the ink dry in the afternoon sun.
"Hannah Miller,
the woman in Santa Fe,
and the woman in Miami didn't get a second chance,
Marcus,
"
I said softly,
looking out over the golden hills.
"I survived that mountain for a reason.
"
"It wasn't just to save my daughter;
it was to make sure those women were never forgotten.
"
May you like
"And to make sure no other mother ever has to freeze in the dark alone.
"
