Chapter 12 - The Cell Block Confession

Two weeks before the formal trial was set to begin,
a surprising break in the case occurred inside the walls of the county jail.
Mason’s cellmate,
a career informant serving time for financial extortion named Frank "The Hook" Russo,
contacted prosecutor David Vance with an offer of extraordinary intelligence.
In exchange for a transfer to a lower-security federal facility,
Russo was willing to provide a secret audio recording he had made using a contraband wire device concealed inside his bunk.
Marcus and I were called to the prosecutor's office late on a Wednesday afternoon to listen to the tape before it was entered into official court evidence.
Prosecutor Vance pressed play on the small tape recorder sitting on his desk.
Static hissed through the speaker for a few seconds,
followed by the hollow,
echoing background noise of the jail module.
Then,
Mason's voice came through—raspy,
bitter,
and filled with unhinged malice.
"She was supposed to freeze within two hours,
"
Mason’s voice bragged on the tape,
unaware he was being recorded.
"The weather forecast guaranteed forty-below wind chills on the ridge.
"
"I took the emergency hammer out of the glove box two days before we drove up.
"
"I didn't think she could break that reinforced safety glass with her bare hands!"
"What about the kid?"
Russo's voice asked on the recording.
"The baby?"
"The baby was part of the payout,
"
Mason sneered on the tape,
his tone cold enough to curdle blood.
"Double indemnity clause for dependent infants under six months.
"
"It would have paid out six million total.
"
"We were going to buy the estate in Tuscany and settle down for good.
"
"That bitch ruined everything by walking out of those woods!"
"She walked four miles in a blizzard carrying that kid,
can you believe that?"
"She should have died on that mountain!"
The recording ended with a soft click,
leaving an icy,
horrifying silence in the prosecutor's room.
I sat frozen in my chair,
my knuckles white as I gripped the arms of the seat,
my heart beating frantically against my chest.
Hearing him speak those words in his own voice—admitting that he intended for our baby to die for a cash bonus—shattered whatever faint remaining doubt anyone in the world could have possessed.
"This is a full,
uncoerced confession,
"
Prosecutor Vance declared,
a look of fierce triumph in his eyes.
"This tape completely destroys any potential defense argument.
"
"It proves premeditation,
malice aforethought,
and absolute depravity of heart.
"
"Will this be played in court?"
I asked,
my voice barely a whisper.
"In front of the jury on opening day,
"
Prosecutor Vance promised.
"Mason Vance just signed his own warrant for life without parole.
"
"He thought he was smart talking to his cellmate,
"
Marcus added,
looking at me with extreme pride.
"He proved once again that his own arrogance is his greatest weakness.
"
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath,
picturing Lily safe at home in her warm crib,
surrounded by love,
miles away from the demonic greed of the man who gave her life.
The mountain had failed to take us,
May you like
and now,
his own dark words were going to bury him forever.
