Chapter 4: The Picture That Changed Everything

I stared at the folder in Dad’s hands, unable to move.

The excitement I had felt that morning was gone.

The graduation dress.

The scissors.

Mia’s strange comments.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Dad placed the folder on the kitchen table.

The person standing beside him was Mrs. Harper, my old art teacher.

I blinked in surprise.

“Mrs. Harper? What are you doing here?””

She gave me a sad smile.

“I wish I was here for a happier reason, Aaliyah.””

My stomach tightened.

Dad pulled out a photograph from the folder and placed it on the table.

The moment I saw it, my breath caught.

It was a picture of my graduation dress.

But it wasn’t the ruined dress.

It was a picture of me wearing it during my final design presentation at school.

The dress looked exactly like I remembered.

Beautiful.

The pearls.

The lace.

The details I had sewn by hand.

“What does this have to do with anything?”” I asked.

Dad looked at Mia.

“Ask her.””

Mia crossed her arms.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Mrs. Harper sighed.

“Mia, you know exactly what this is about.””

I looked between them.

“Can someone please explain?””

Dad took a deep breath.

“Aaliyah, your dress was entered into the student design showcase last month.””

I frowned.

“I never entered it.””

Mrs. Harper nodded.

“You didn’t. Someone else submitted photos of your work.””

My eyes widened.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Dad looked at Mia.

The silence answered before anyone did.

“Mia?”” I whispered.

She looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I really don’t.””

Mia’s expression hardened.

“I was helping you.””

“Helping me?””

My voice rose.

“You submitted my dress without telling me?””

Mrs. Harper stepped closer.

“Mia entered the design showcase under her own name.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“She what?””

Dad slid another paper across the table.

It was a registration form.

The name at the top was clear.

*Mia Bennett.*

My hands started shaking.

“She claimed she made it?””

Mia finally looked at me.

“I only used the idea.””

“The idea?””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You mean the dress I designed? The dress I paid for? The dress I spent months making?””

She looked frustrated.

“You always get attention for everything.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Mia’s voice cracked.

“You’re the smart one. The hardworking one. Everyone always talks about how proud they are of you.””

“So you stole my work?””

“No!””

She slammed her hand on the table.

“I wanted one thing that was mine.””

I looked at the destroyed dress sitting nearby.

“Then why didn’t you make something yourself?””

Mia had no answer.

Dad looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

And somehow, that hurt her more.

“You didn’t destroy fabric yesterday,” Dad said quietly.

Mia swallowed.

“What?””

“You destroyed evidence.””

Her face changed.

Because he was right.

The dress wasn’t just a dress.

It was proof.

Proof that she had lied.

Mrs. Harper opened another folder.

“There’s more.””

Mia immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

She froze.

For the first time, she looked scared.

Dad opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Messages.

Photos.

My heart pounded.

“What is that?””

Mrs. Harper answered.

“Proof that Aaliyah created the design months before Mia submitted it.””

I looked at Mia.

She had known.

She knew destroying the dress would make it harder for me to prove anything.

She wasn’t embarrassed by my dress.

She was afraid of losing her lie.

Dad slowly gathered the papers.

“Mia, you need to understand something.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t get to hurt someone just because you’re jealous of what they earned.””

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

But then she said something I never expected.

“You think this is all my fault?””

Everyone became quiet.

Mia looked at Claire.

Her mother.

“I didn’t do this alone.””

My heart stopped.

Dad turned toward Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Claire’s face went pale.

May you like

And for the first time…

Mia wasn’t the only person in the room who looked guilty.
