Chapter 12: The Person Who Started It All

I read the note three times.

Each time, the same fear returned.

Who really started this?

I thought I already knew.

Mia.

Claire.

The lies.

The stolen design.

The fake account.

But the note suggested something else.

Someone had been behind everything from the beginning.

Dad looked over my shoulder.

“Who sent that?””

“I don’t know.””

He took the note carefully.

“No name?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Mrs. Harper helped us trace the paper and handwriting, but nothing matched.

It was like someone wanted me to find the truth.

But only when they were ready.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I kept thinking about every moment from the past year.

Every strange comment.

Every awkward silence.

Every time someone seemed to know more than they admitted.

Then I remembered something.

A conversation with Claire months ago.

She had asked me a strange question.

“Do you think people who make mistakes deserve a second chance?””

At the time, I thought she was talking about Mia.

Now I wondered.

Was she talking about herself?

The next morning, Dad received a call.

His expression changed while he listened.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Where?””

A few seconds later, he hung up.

“That was the bank.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“They found another transaction connected to Claire’s debt.””

I frowned.

“Another?””

Dad nodded.

“And it wasn’t just her.””

He handed me a paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the name on the transaction was someone I never expected.

Mia.

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“I can explain.””

Dad’s voice was quiet.

“When?””

Mia swallowed.

“Before everything happened.””

I stared at her.

“What did you do?””

She looked like she was about to cry.

“I tried to fix Mom’s mistake.””

“And?””

“And I made it worse.””

The room felt heavy.

Mia explained that after discovering what Claire had done, she tried to secretly return the money.

She borrowed money.

She lied.

She made deals she couldn’t keep.

And when she realized the showcase could expose everything…

She panicked.

“You should have told someone,” I said.

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was afraid everyone would hate me.””

I looked at her.

“And now?””

She looked at me.

“I think everyone already does.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because for the first time, Mia wasn’t trying to win.

She wasn’t trying to be better.

She was finally admitting she was wrong.

But before I could answer, Dad’s phone rang again.

This time, his face changed completely.

“What?””

He listened.

Then slowly sat down.

“Aaliyah…”

I felt cold.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“The person who sent the anonymous notes has been found.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Dad looked toward the door.

Because at that exact moment…

Someone knocked.

And when the door opened, I saw the person standing there.

The person who had known the truth from the beginning.

The person who had been watching everything happen.

And the first words they said were:

“Aaliyah, I’m sorry. I should have stopped this before your dress was ever touched.””
