Chapter 2: A Lesson She Never Expected
The room became completely silent.
Mia’s face changed the moment she saw Dad holding her bag.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“Dad,” she said slowly, “put that down.””
David looked at the bag in his hands.
It was a luxury handbag Mia had talked about for months. She had begged her mother for it, and when she finally got it, she carried it everywhere like it was a trophy.
Dad looked back at her.
“Why?””
Mia stepped forward.
“Because that’s mine.””
Dad nodded.
“Interesting.””
He placed the bag on the table.
“You know what’s interesting, Mia? Two hours ago, you told Aaliyah that her dress was just fabric.””
Mia crossed her arms.
“That’s different.””
“How?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Dad walked over to the damaged dress and carefully picked it up.
“This took your stepsister six months to buy.””
Mia looked away.
“She could get another one.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“And you can get another bag.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
Dad lifted the bag.
“It’s just leather, right?””
The color disappeared from Mia’s face.
“No. It’s not the same.””
Dad stared at her.
“Explain the difference.””
Mia looked at her mother, hoping for support.
“Mom?””
Her mother, Claire, immediately stepped in.
“David, you’re overreacting. Mia made a mistake, but destroying her bag would be childish.””
Dad turned toward her.
“A mistake?””
Claire sighed.
“Yes. She shouldn’t have cut it, but Aaliyah is making this into a huge issue.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because Mia hurt me.
Because my own stepmother was defending her.
Dad noticed my expression.
He walked closer to me.
“Aaliyah, look at me.””
I did.
“I’m sorry you had to stand there and listen to people act like this wasn’t a big deal.””
My eyes burned.
For months, I had tried to keep peace.
I had smiled when Mia mocked my clothes.
I stayed quiet when she compared our grades.
I ignored the little comments because I didn’t want to become the “difficult” one in the family.
But that day, Dad finally saw everything.
Mia pointed at him.
“You’re seriously taking her side?””
Dad looked confused.
“Her side?””
“Yes. You always choose her.””
Dad shook his head.
“No, Mia. I choose what’s right.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Of course. The perfect daughter gets protected again.””
My stomach tightened.
Perfect daughter.
That was the word Mia always used.
As if my hard work was an insult to her.
Dad walked toward the stairs.
“Mia, go to your room.””
She stared at him.
“Are you punishing me?””
“No.””
He paused.
“I’m giving you time to think about why you thought hurting someone who loved you was acceptable.””
Mia grabbed her bag.
“You’re unbelievable.””
She stormed upstairs.
But before she disappeared, Dad said something that made her stop.
“Mia.””
She turned.
“You keep saying Aaliyah gets everything.””
Dad looked at the torn dress.
“But today, she lost something she worked for.””
Then he looked directly at Mia’s bag.
“And you’re about to learn what that feels like.””
That night, I sat on my bedroom floor, holding the damaged dress in my lap.
Dad sat beside me.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner,” he said quietly.
I shook my head.
“You were busy. I didn’t want to cause problems.””
He looked hurt.
“Sweetheart, protecting the peace should never mean accepting disrespect.””
I wiped my eyes.
“Do you think I can fix it?””
Dad looked at the dress.
“I don’t know.””
Then he smiled slightly.
“But I know something else.””
“What?””
“Tomorrow morning, you’re still walking across that stage.””
I smiled for the first time all day.
But neither of us knew that while we were downstairs talking…
Mia was upstairs sending a message to someone that would change everything.
May you like
A message that revealed she hadn’t destroyed the dress because she hated the style.
She destroyed it because of a secret she thought Aaliyah would never discover.
