Chapter 14: Walking Across The Stage

Two weeks later, I stood backstage at graduation.

The same place I had imagined for months.

But everything felt different.

The dress was repaired.

The rumors were gone.

The showcase committee had restored my entry.

Jenna publicly admitted her mistake and apologized.

The school learned the truth.

And Claire?

She moved out after Dad discovered there were even more lies she had hidden.

It wasn’t a happy ending.

Not yet.

Because broken trust doesn’t disappear overnight.

But for the first time in months…

I could breathe.

Mia stood beside me in the hallway.

She looked at my dress.

“It looks beautiful.””

I smiled slightly.

“Thank you.””

She touched the repaired lace carefully.

“I still can’t believe you fixed it.””

“I almost didn’t.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then she said:

“I know I don’t deserve it, but…”

She stopped.

I looked at her.

“But what?””

“Thank you for not becoming like me.””

The words surprised me.

I didn’t know what to say.

Then our names were called.

One by one, students walked across the stage.

Families cheered.

Cameras flashed.

And finally…

“Aaliyah Johnson.””

My heart started pounding.

I stepped forward.

The lights were bright.

The crowd was loud.

But somehow, everything became quiet.

I looked toward the audience.

Dad was standing.

Not recording.

Not taking pictures.

Just watching.

With tears in his eyes.

I walked across the stage.

I accepted my diploma.

Then I accepted the award for the student design showcase.

The applause felt different.

Because this time, nobody could take it away from me.

After the ceremony, Dad hugged me.

“I’m proud of you.””

I smiled.

“Even after all this?””

He looked confused.

“Especially after all this.””

I laughed.

Then he handed me a small box.

“What is it?””

“Open it.””

Inside was a necklace.

A simple one.

With a tiny pearl pendant.

I looked at him.

“Dad…”

He smiled.

“Your original dress had pearls.””

I touched the necklace.

“It’s beautiful.””

“I wanted you to remember something.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“People can tear apart things you create.””

He paused.

“But they can never tear apart who you are.””

I hugged him.

For the first time in weeks, I felt like I was finally standing in my own life again.

That evening, I received one final message.

From an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*“You think the story is over, but there is one person who still hasn’t told you why the dress was chosen in the first place.””*

I stared at the screen.

Because there was one question I had never asked.

Why that dress?

Why did everyone fight over that specific design?

Then I looked at the necklace Dad gave me.

The pearl.

The same detail from the dress.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

May you like

Something my mother used to wear.

Something I had forgotten.
