Chapter 6 - The Shark Arrives

The door handle clicked softly,
and my breath caught in my throat.
I hid the burner phone beneath my sheets,
praying it wasn't Daniel returning early.
The heavy wooden door pushed open,
and a tall figure stepped into the dim light of the hospital room.
It was Marcus,
wearing a sharply tailored charcoal suit,
his tie loosened around his neck.
His dark eyes scanned the room instantly,
searching for hidden cameras,
checking the shadows like a trained predator.
When his gaze finally landed on me,
the cold professionalism vanished from his face.
He rushed to the side of my bed,
his jaw clenched so tightly I could see a muscle ticking in his cheek.
"Elena,"
he breathed,
his voice cracking with a mixture of rage and overwhelming grief.
He looked at the thick,
white bandages wrapping my chest,
his hands hovering in the air,
too afraid to touch me and cause more pain.
"I'm here, Marcus,"
I whispered,
a fresh wave of tears spilling over my eyelashes.
"I thought I would never see you again."
He pulled a chair close to the bed,
sitting down with a heavy,
exhausted sigh.
"He kept you completely isolated,
Elena,"
Marcus said,
his voice dropping to a dangerous,
lethal whisper.
"Every time I tried to call,
the number was disconnected.
Every email bounced back.
I even drove by your house last year,
but Daniel threatened to call the police,
claiming you were having a nervous breakdown and needed absolute peace."
I closed my eyes,
feeling the weight of those three stolen years pressing down on my chest.
"He built a cage,
Marcus,"
I sobbed,
the emotional dam finally breaking completely.
"He convinced everyone I was crazy,
forgetful,
unstable.
He took my money,
he took my career,
and then he let his mother do this to me."
Marcus reached out,
gently taking my uninjured hand in his,
his grip firm and reassuring.
"I listened to the audio file you sent me,"
he stated,
his eyes darkening with a terrifying,
unrelenting fury.
"It is a goldmine,
Elena.
It is the exact weapon we need to tear them apart."
He opened his leather briefcase,
pulling out a stack of pristine,
legal documents.
"I have already filed an emergency injunction to freeze all joint accounts,
claiming suspected financial abuse and domestic violence,"
he explained,
pointing to the bold black text.
"By tomorrow morning,
Daniel will go to buy his expensive coffee,
and his platinum cards will be declined."
A small,
vindictive thrill rushed through my veins.
"What about his mother?"
I asked,
my voice trembling with anticipation.
"The recording is enough for an assault charge,
but we have to be strategic,"
Marcus replied,
leaning in closer,
his tone utterly serious.
"If we go to the police right now,
Daniel will hire the best defense team in the city.
He will spin the narrative,
bribe witnesses,
and claim you doctored the audio because of your 'mental instability'."
I swallowed hard,
tasting the bitter reality of his words.
"So what do we do?"
I asked,
trusting him completely.
"We let them dig a deeper grave,"
Marcus smiled,
a cold,
shark-like grin that sent shivers down my spine.

"We let Daniel believe he is still in control,
while we dismantle his life from the inside out."
