Chapter 13 - The Cavalry Arrives

The screaming match in the foyer lasted for another twenty minutes,
a beautiful,
chaotic symphony of their mutual destruction.
I sat on the floor of the guest room,
my back resting gently against the wall,
breathing steadily for the first time in three years.
The burner phone vibrated softly against my leg,
a single,
sharp pulse that meant it was time.
I opened the text from Marcus,
my eyes scanning the glowing letters in the dark.
'We are pulling into the driveway,
stay away from the door,
do exactly what the officers tell you to do.'
My heart hammered against my ribs,
a frantic,
wild rhythm of anticipation and lingering terror.
I heard the heavy rumble of engines approaching the house,
not one car,
but several,
tires crunching aggressively on the expensive gravel.
Daniel and Vivian stopped screaming simultaneously,
the sudden silence in the house thick and pregnant with impending doom.
"Who is that?"
Vivian asked,
her voice shaking,
the false bravado completely stripped away.
"I don't know,"
Daniel replied,
his footsteps moving slowly,
hesitantly toward the front window.
I heard the sharp,
authoritative knock on the heavy oak door,
three loud,
commanding thuds that echoed through the entire estate.
"Daniel Sterling?"
a deep,
powerful voice called out from the porch.
"This is the police,
open the door immediately."
A whimpering sound escaped Vivian's throat,
the sound of a cornered animal realizing the trap has finally snapped shut.
"Don't open it,"
she hissed,
panic seizing her vocal cords.
"We need to call our lawyer,
we don't have to let them in."
"They have a warrant, mother,"
Daniel muttered,
his spirit breaking,
the reality of his defeat washing over him in a cold wave.
I heard the locks turning,
the heavy door groaning as it opened,
letting the bright,
unforgiving light of justice spill into the dark,
corrupt foyer.
"Daniel Sterling,"
the officer announced,
his tone leaving no room for argument or charm.
"We have a warrant for your arrest,
and a warrant for the arrest of Vivian Sterling.
We also have an emergency protective order to extract Elena Sterling from this residence."
"This is a massive misunderstanding,"
Daniel tried,
falling back on his old,
reliable tricks,
layering his voice with fake concern and confusion.
"My wife is deeply unwell,
she suffers from severe delusions,
she has been making things up for years."
"Save it for the judge,"
another voice cut in,
a voice I knew instantly,
a voice that made me burst into tears of pure joy.
Marcus stepped into the house,
his presence dominating the room,
his tailored suit acting as armor in this battlefield of lies.
"Mr. Hale,"
Daniel gasped,
recognizing the attorney he had tried so hard to banish from my life.
"You have no right to be here,
this is private property."
"I have every right,"
Marcus replied smoothly,
holding up a thick stack of official court documents.
"I am representing your wife,
the woman you isolated,
abused,
and allowed your mother to torture.
Officers,
she is locked in the back guest room."
I heard heavy boots running down the hallway,
the sound of salvation echoing against the walls.
Keys jingled,
the deadbolt clicked loudly,
and the door swung open,
revealing two uniformed police officers and a female paramedic.
The light from the hallway blinded me for a second,
but I didn't care,
I scrambled to my feet,
ignoring the pain in my back.
"Mrs. Sterling?"
the female officer asked gently,
reaching out a steady,
reassuring hand.
"You are safe now,
we are getting you out of here."
I took her hand,
May you like
stepping out of the dark cage,
ready to watch my captors burn.
