Chapter 11 - The Shattered Glass Facade

The silence in the dining room was absolute,
heavy,
and suffocating.
Mr. Harrison stood up slowly,
his chair scraping loudly against the polished hardwood floor,
a sound that seemed to echo for an eternity.
He did not look at Daniel,
he did not look at the expensive wine pooling on the table,
he only looked at me.
His eyes were wide,
filled with a sudden,
horrifying realization of what was truly happening in this house.
His wife reached out,
her trembling hand gripping her husband's arm,
her face pale and drawn.
"Daniel,"
Mr. Harrison said,
his voice low,
dangerously calm,
and entirely stripped of the friendly warmth he had brought into our home.
"I think it is best if we leave,
immediately."
Daniel stepped forward,
his charming mask frantically trying to reassemble itself,
his hands raised in a desperate gesture of peace.
"Sir,
please,"
Daniel pleaded,
his voice cracking with panicked desperation,
the smooth confidence completely shattered.
"Elena is just confused,
her medication makes her hallucinate,
she doesn't know what she is saying."
I kept my hands over my face,
peeking through my fingers,
letting out a series of ragged,
pitiful sobs that I knew would twist the knife deeper.
"Don't let her burn me again,"
I wailed,
my voice trembling with a fabricated terror that mirrored the very real fear I had lived with for years.
Vivian slammed the heavy soup tureen onto the table,
the hot liquid splashing over the sides,
burning her own wrist in the process.
She hissed in pain,
but nobody moved to help her,
nobody cared.
"You ungrateful little wretch,"
Vivian spat,
her true colors exploding violently into the open,
her face twisted into a mask of pure,
unadulterated hatred.
Mr. Harrison stepped between his wife and Vivian,
shielding her from the venomous display.
"Do not speak to her that way,"
Mr. Harrison commanded,
his authority echoing through the grand,
ostentatious room.
"I have seen enough,
Daniel,
more than enough to know that something deeply sinister is occurring under this roof."
Daniel reached out to grab his boss's shoulder,
a massive,
unforgivable breach of professional etiquette,
driven by pure desperation.
"You don't understand,"
Daniel begged,
sweat beading on his forehead,
ruining his perfectly styled hair.
"She is crazy,
she is trying to ruin me,
she has always been jealous of my success."
Mr. Harrison brushed Daniel's hand away with intense disgust,
adjusting his suit jacket with sharp,
angry movements.
"I will see you in my office on Monday morning,
Daniel,"
Mr. Harrison stated coldly,
turning his back on my husband,
a definitive end to Daniel's rising career.
"And I strongly suggest you seek professional help,
for yourself,
and for the safety of your wife."
The Harrisons walked out of the house,
the heavy oak front door slamming shut behind them,
sealing my fate with the two monsters I had just exposed.
As soon as the lock clicked,
the atmosphere in the room shifted from tense embarrassment to lethal,
unhinged violence.
Daniel turned to me,
his eyes black with rage,
his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were completely white.
He marched across the room,
grabbing my uninjured arm,
yanking me out of the chair with a brutal,
unforgiving force.
I screamed,
stumbling over the hem of the silk dress,
falling hard onto my knees.
"You stupid,
worthless bitch,"
Daniel roared,
spitting the words down at me,
all of his calculated charm vanishing into the ether.
"Do you have any idea what you just did?
You just cost me my partnership,
you ruined my reputation."
Vivian paced around the table,
wiping the spilled soup from her hands,
glaring down at me with murderous intent.
"I told you to keep her locked in the room,"
Vivian snapped at Daniel,
pointing an accusing finger at him.
"I told you she was planning something,
I told you she was dangerous."
Daniel ignored her,
dragging me across the floor,
pulling me down the long,
dark hallway toward the guest room.
My knees scraped against the wood,
the violent movement tearing at the healing scabs on my back,
sending agonizing,
blinding flares of pain through my entire nervous system.
"I am going to lock you in this room,
Elena,"
Daniel hissed,
throwing me onto the stiff mattress,
towering over me like a demonic shadow.
"You are not going to eat,
you are not going to drink,
until you figure out how to fix this mess."
He slammed the door,
the heavy deadbolt sliding into place,
plunging me into total darkness.
I lay on the bed,
gasping for air,
my body trembling from the physical assault,
but my mind was soaring.
I looked up at the corner of the room,
where the small,
blinking green light of the air purifier shone like a beacon of hope in the night.
Leo’s hidden camera had captured everything,
every violent shove,
every hateful word,
every single piece of damning evidence Marcus needed.
I smiled in the dark,
May you like
wiping the fake tears from my cheeks,
knowing that the war was finally turning in my favor.
