Chapter 12 - The Empire Crumbles

The sun rose the next morning,
casting long,
pale shadows across the floor of my locked prison.
I had not slept a single wink,
my mind buzzing with adrenaline,
calculating every possible move Daniel might make in his desperate panic.
I pulled the cracked burner phone from its hiding place,
the screen illuminating my exhausted face in the dim room.
There was a message from Marcus,
sent just minutes ago,
a short,
ruthless confirmation of our victory.
'The injunction is active,
the accounts are frozen,
enjoy the show, El.'
I hugged the phone to my chest,
a profound,
overwhelming sense of relief washing over my battered body.
On the other side of the heavy door,
I heard the muffled sounds of Daniel waking up,
his heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway as he prepared for what he thought would be a normal Saturday.
He would go to his exclusive country club,
he would order his expensive breakfast,
he would try to pretend last night never happened,
because his ego could not process failure.
I listened closely,
pressing my ear against the cold wood of the door,
tracking his movements through the sprawling,
empty house.
I heard the front door open and close,
the engine of his luxury car roaring to life,
tires screeching slightly on the pristine gravel driveway.
An hour passed,
a slow,
agonizing hour of anticipation,
waiting for the inevitable explosion.
Then,
the front door slammed open,
the sound so violent it made the walls of my room shake.
"Vivian!"
Daniel screamed,
his voice cracking,
echoing with a frantic,
terrified hysteria I had never heard from him before.
"Where are you?
Get down here right now!"
I heard Vivian rushing down the stairs,
her slippers slapping against the marble,
her voice tight with confusion.
"What is it, Daniel?
Why are you screaming like a madman?"
"They declined my card,"
Daniel shouted,
the words tumbling out of his mouth in a panicked rush.
"I went to pay for my breakfast,
and the platinum card was declined.
I tried the black card,
declined.
I tried the joint account,
frozen."
There was a long,
stunned silence in the foyer,
the weight of his words crashing down on their delusional,
privileged reality.
"That is impossible,"
Vivian argued,
her voice trembling with sudden,
sharp anxiety.
"You have millions in those accounts,
the bank must have made a mistake,
a computer error."
"It is not a mistake,"
Daniel roared,
the sound of something heavy smashing against the wall,
glass shattering into a thousand pieces.
"I called the private banker,
he told me there is a court-ordered injunction on all of my assets,
everything has been frozen pending an investigation into financial abuse."
"Financial abuse?"
Vivian gasped,
the reality of the situation finally piercing her arrogant armor.
"Who would file that?
You control everything,
she doesn't even have a phone."
"I don't know!"
Daniel screamed,
his footsteps pacing wildly back and forth across the hardwood floor.
"But somebody helped her,
somebody knows what we did,
and they are dismantling my entire life."
I smiled behind the locked door,
a fierce,
unapologetic smile,
savoring the sweet,
intoxicating taste of their absolute panic.
"We need to get her out of here,"
Vivian suggested,
her voice dropping to a sinister,
conspiratorial whisper.
"We can take her to the cabin in the mountains,
no one will find her there,
we can force her to drop the charges."
"Are you insane?"
Daniel snapped,
turning his rage entirely onto his mother,
fracturing their unholy alliance in a matter of seconds.
"If we move her now,
it looks like kidnapping.
You are the one who poured the oil,
you are the one who started this entire mess!"
"I did it for you!"
Vivian shrieked,
her voice shrill and defensive.
"I did it to teach that ungrateful bitch a lesson,
to put her in her place,
because you were too weak to control your own wife."
"Control her?"
Daniel laughed,
a manic,
unhinged sound that chilled my blood.
"I had her perfectly controlled until you decided to play torturer.
Now my career is over,
my money is gone,
and I am going to end up in a federal prison because of your stupidity."
They continued to scream at each other,
trading vicious insults,
May you like
tearing each other apart like rabid dogs fighting over a bone,
unaware that the hidden cameras were recording every single confession.
