Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings of the mansion’s grand dining hall. It was a space designed to project absolute power, framed by pristine ivory-paneled walls and an imposing, carved marble fireplace. The luxurious interior was heavily perfumed with the scent of white roses, meticulously arranged between tall candles glowing in heavy silver candelabras. Polished walnut tables stretched across the expanse of the room, surrounded by champagne velvet chairs that currently held the most influential figures in the city’s underworld. Soft supplementary lighting clearly revealed every face, illuminating the fair, rosy skin and polished smiles of the elite guests who had gathered to welcome their king back from his travels.
At the head of the room stood Soren Blackwell. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classic leading man. His powerful, broad shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit effortlessly. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. Cold, perceptive eyes surveyed his domain, missing nothing. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous spacing, while a small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The western territory has been entirely secured during your absence, Soren," a wealthy syndicate lieutenant remarked, raising his crystal stemware. "Your swift return is a cause for celebration."
Soren turned his gaze toward the man, his heavy family signet ring gleaming under the chandelier. "Are we celebrating my return, Marcus, or the fact that the territory remained intact while I was gone?"
His deep, low voice vibrated with a controlled pause, instantly commanding the attention of the table.
To his right stood Camilla Vane, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted champagne silk gown that clung perfectly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed against her rosy complexion, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She offered a warm, carefully reassuring public smile to the guests.
"We are celebrating our family, darling," Camilla said smoothly, her American accent light and melodic. "Everything is exactly as it should be."

Nearby, standing quietly in a pale-blue party dress and a soft cardigan, was seven-year-old Alice Blackwell. The little girl’s flat shoes remained perfectly still on the polished floor. She was unnervingly watchful, her fair face pale and her eyes darting nervously toward the head table.
Standing just a few feet away, tending to a bassinet, was Elodie Finch. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing a softly heart-shaped face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her hair was gathered into a loose, elegant low twist. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform. Her graceful posture belied the sudden, twisting knot of anxiety forming in her stomach as she looked down into the shadows of the bassinet.
