Chapter 8 - Into the Freezing Abyss and the Relentless Hunt

The heavy sleet hit my face like a million tiny,

frozen needles,

instantly blinding me as I plunged desperately into the pitch-black darkness of the overgrown clearing.

"Hannah,"

I called out blindly,

the fierce wind snatching my frantic voice and throwing it away into the deep woods,

making it completely impossible for her to hear my desperate cries.

I stumbled wildly toward the dark shape of my parked car,

my boots slipping dangerously in the thick,

freezing mud,

my hands reaching out blindly to feel the cold,

wet metal of the vehicle.

But as I rounded the front bumper,

my heart completely sank,

realizing immediately that the heavy passenger door was still hanging wide open,

and the dark interior of the small car was completely empty.

She had not stayed in the car,

she had run directly into the dense,

terrifying forest,

probably terrified that her father was going to easily break the glass windows,

choosing the dark,

unknown woods over a trapped metal box.

A loud,

furious scream echoed clearly from the front porch of the cabin,

and I turned quickly to see Aaron standing perfectly illuminated in the glowing doorway,

holding a large,

heavy flashlight in his right hand.

The bright beam of harsh white light cut aggressively through the falling sleet,

sweeping rapidly back and forth across the muddy clearing,

searching desperately for any obvious signs of our escape.

I crouched down instantly behind the rear bumper of my car,

pressing my freezing body flat against the cold,

wet metal,

praying silently that he would not spot my dark clothes in the heavy shadows.

"You cannot hide from me out here,"

he yelled loudly,

his voice echoing menacingly against the tall,

silent trees,

sounding like a crazy,

deranged hunter stalking his helpless prey.

"There is absolutely nowhere for you to go,

the storm is getting much worse,

and you will both freeze to death in the woods if you do not come back inside right now."

I ignored his manipulative,

lying promises,

crawling slowly and painfully on my hands and knees through the deep,

freezing mud,

moving carefully away from the parked car and toward the thick,

impenetrable tree line.

I had to find my daughter before he did,

I had to find her in this massive,

dark wilderness,

and I had to somehow keep her safe until the police finally figured out where we were.

The forest floor was a treacherous,

deadly obstacle course of slippery,

rotten logs,

deep,

hidden puddles of freezing water,

and sharp,

tangled thorny bushes that tore viciously at my wet clothes and my exposed skin.

Every single time the wind howled through the high branches,

it sounded exactly like a person screaming,

making my racing heart leap painfully into my dry throat,

making me spin around wildly in the suffocating darkness.

"Mom,"

a tiny,

trembling whisper suddenly floated through the freezing air,

so incredibly quiet that I almost dismissed it as just another trick of the howling wind.

I stopped completely still,

holding my ragged breath,

straining my freezing ears to listen over the loud,

relentless pounding of the heavy sleet against the pine needles.

"Mom,

I am over here,"

the small voice whispered again,

coming from somewhere slightly to my left,

hidden deeply behind a massive,

ancient boulder that protruded sharply from the muddy earth.

I scrambled desperately toward the huge rock,

falling heavily twice into the freezing mud,

scraping my bare hands painfully on the jagged,

hidden stones,

before finally rounding the massive corner.

Hannah was huddled tightly in a small,

shallow depression beneath the overhanging rock,

her knees pulled up tightly to her chest,

her teeth chattering so violently that I could hear the clicking sound over the loud storm.

I threw myself onto the freezing ground beside her,

wrapping my wet,

freezing arms tightly around her small,

shaking body,

pulling her entirely onto my lap to share whatever tiny amount of body heat I still had left.

"I am right here,

baby,"

I whispered frantically into her wet hair,

kissing the top of her cold head over and over again,

tears of pure relief mixing warmly with the freezing rain on my cheeks.

"You are so incredibly brave,

you are doing such a perfect job,

I am so very proud of you."

Suddenly,

a bright,

blinding beam of white flashlight cut sharply through the dark trees just a few yards away,

illuminating the falling sleet like a million glowing diamonds,

sweeping dangerously close to our hidden sanctuary.

"I know exactly where you are going,"

Aaron's deep,

angry voice drifted slowly through the trees,

sounding much closer than before,

meaning he was actively tracking our messy,

muddy footprints through the soft earth.

"You are acting completely hysterical,

just come out right now and we can talk about this like rational adults,

I promise I will not be angry with you anymore."

Hannah pressed her cold face deeply into my wet jacket,

trembling violently against my chest,

her small fingers gripping the fabric of my coat with desperate,

terrifying strength.

I clamped my hand gently but firmly over her small mouth,

signaling silently for her to remain absolutely quiet,

May you like

knowing that a single,

accidental cough or a loud sob would give away our exact position instantly.
