Chapter 10 - The Flash of Blue and the Final Stand in the Mud

I shoved Hannah violently behind my back,

standing up shakily in the knee-deep freezing water of the muddy ditch,

placing my battered,

exhausted body directly between my daughter and the monster rapidly descending the steep hill.

I had absolutely no weapon left,

my hands were completely numb from the terrible cold,

and my legs were shaking so violently they could barely support my own meager weight,

but I was fully prepared to fight him with my bare teeth if necessary.

Aaron hit the bottom of the muddy incline hard,

stumbling forward slightly but catching his balance quickly,

the bright flashlight still clutched tightly in his hand,

shining directly into my squinting,

watery eyes.

"It is completely over,"

he sneered breathlessly,

his chest heaving heavily from the difficult exertion,

his expensive clothes completely ruined by the thick mountain mud,

looking exactly like the deranged,

unstable lunatic he truly was.

"There is absolutely nowhere else to run,

you have completely ruined this entire weekend,

and now I have to teach you a very painful lesson about respect."

He dropped the heavy flashlight carelessly onto the muddy ground,

leaving the bright beam pointing aimlessly into the dark woods,

and he lunged aggressively forward,

grabbing the thick fabric of my wet jacket with both of his strong hands.

He threw me violently backward into the deep mud,

the cold,

dirty water splashing heavily over my face,

choking me instantly as I fought desperately to keep my head above the freezing surface.

He fell heavily on top of me,

his heavy knees pinning my arms securely into the soft mud,

his large hands reaching aggressively for my throat,

his thumbs pressing painfully into my windpipe,

cutting off my precious oxygen completely.

I thrashed wildly beneath his crushing weight,

kicking my freezing legs frantically against his back,

trying desperately to buck him off,

but his physical advantage was simply too massive to overcome.

"Get off my mom,"

Hannah screamed hysterically,

jumping bravely onto his broad back,

hitting his head repeatedly with her small,

shaking fists,

trying desperately to save my life.

Aaron grunted angrily,

releasing his tight grip on my bruised throat just long enough to swat backward with his heavy arm,

striking her forcefully and sending her tumbling backward into the freezing mud with a loud,

terrifying splash.

The sudden sight of him hitting our beautiful daughter triggered a massive,

explosive surge of adrenaline deep within my dying brain,

providing me with a final,

superhuman burst of motherly strength.

I reached my numb hand up blindly,

my fingers clawing aggressively into his left eye,

gouging deeply until he screamed loudly in absolute agony,

forcing him to roll violently off my chest to clutch his injured face.

I scrambled quickly to my hands and knees,

coughing up mouthfuls of dirty,

freezing water,

gasping desperately for the cold,

sweet air,

my throat burning terribly with every single frantic breath I took.

Before he could recover from the sudden pain,

before he could lunge at me again in the dark,

a massive,

deafening sound suddenly echoed through the narrow mountain valley,

completely overpowering the loud howling of the terrible storm.

It was the distinct,

unmistakable sound of heavy,

mud-terrain tires tearing violently up the logging road,

accompanied instantly by the bright,

flashing strobe of brilliant red and blue police lights cutting through the pitch-black night.

Three large,

heavy police SUVs came skidding rapidly around the sharp corner,

their massive spotlights hitting us instantly,

lighting up the muddy ditch like it was the middle of the bright afternoon.

"Police,

do not move a single muscle,"

a loud,

booming voice echoed heavily from an electronic megaphone,

and the car doors flew open instantly,

revealing several heavily armed officers pouring out into the freezing rain.

Aaron froze completely still in the deep mud,

his hands raised slowly into the air,

the blinding police lights illuminating the absolute,

total defeat washing rapidly across his pale,

bruised face.

Detective Miller sprinted quickly down the muddy embankment,

his dark coat flapping wildly in the strong wind,

his heavy service weapon drawn and pointed directly at Aaron's chest,

his face set into a mask of pure,

professional fury.

Two uniformed officers tackled Aaron aggressively into the mud,

pulling his arms violently behind his back,

the loud,

satisfying click of heavy metal handcuffs echoing beautifully in the cold night air.

I did not care about him anymore,

I did not care about the police,

I simply crawled frantically through the cold water until I reached Hannah,

pulling her completely into my arms,

holding her tighter than I had ever held anything in my entire life.

"I've got you,"

I whispered over and over again,

rocking her gently in the freezing mud,

the bright blue and red lights washing over us in a beautiful,

comforting rhythm.

"I've got you,

and he is never,

ever going to hurt us again."

Detective Miller knelt quietly beside us in the deep mud,

draping a thick,

warm thermal blanket completely over our freezing shoulders,

his eyes softening deeply as he looked down at the two of us.

"You did an incredibly brave thing tonight,"

he said softly,

helping us slowly to our shaking feet,

guiding us gently toward the warm,

waiting police vehicle.

As I sat safely in the back seat,

feeling the wonderful,

glorious heat blasting from the car vents,

I looked out the window one last time,

May you like

watching them drag Aaron away in heavy chains,

knowing that our terrible nightmare was finally,
