Chapter 14 - The Financial Ruin and the Uncovering of the Grand Scheme

The massive,

imposing glass doors of the expensive downtown law firm slid open smoothly,

welcoming me into a world of polished marble floors and highly intimidating,

incredibly expensive legal professionals.

It had been exactly three exhausting,

stressful days since that horrific,

violent night in the freezing mountain cabin,

and the relentless,

crushing reality of the legal aftermath was finally crashing down upon my tired shoulders.

I sat nervously in the plush,

leather chair of a massive,

sunlit conference room,

staring blankly at the huge stack of complicated legal documents spread out aggressively across the polished mahogany table.

My new attorney,

a fierce,

brilliant woman named Sarah Hastings,

was pacing rapidly back and forth in front of the massive windows,

speaking rapidly into a small,

silver dictaphone.

She was a highly recommended,

incredibly aggressive family law specialist,

a woman who completely specialized in destroying arrogant,

narcissistic men who tried to financially ruin their ex-wives.

"The sheer scale of his financial fraud is absolutely staggering,"

Sarah announced loudly,

clicking the small device off and tossing it carelessly onto the wooden table,

taking a seat directly across from my tired face.

"He didn't just empty the joint investment accounts,

he illegally forged your signature on a massive,

secondary mortgage application for the house you currently live in,

extracting nearly four hundred thousand dollars in pure cash."

I gasped loudly,

my hands flying up to cover my open,

shocked mouth,

my racing mind struggling desperately to process the absolute,

unforgivable depth of his financial betrayal.

"If he had actually successfully escaped the country with Hannah,"

Sarah continued grimly,

her sharp eyes locking intensely onto mine,

"the bank would have aggressively foreclosed on your home within three short months,

leaving you completely homeless,

penniless,

and entirely unable to fund a private search for your missing child."

He had actively tried to destroy absolutely every single aspect of my life,

leaving nothing but scorched,

ruined earth behind his cowardly,

pathetic escape.

He wanted me to suffer endlessly in a cold,

empty house,

surrounded constantly by crippling,

insurmountable debt,

while he lived like a wealthy king on a beautiful tropical island with my kidnapped daughter.

"Can we legally get the stolen money back,"

I asked quietly,

feeling incredibly small and entirely helpless in the face of such a massive,

calculated criminal conspiracy.

Sarah smiled,

a sharp,

dangerous smile that reminded me of a hungry,

circling shark smelling fresh blood in the water.

"Detective Miller already secured a massive federal freeze on his offshore Cayman accounts,"

she explained confidently,

tapping a long,

manicured finger against a printed bank statement.

"Because the funds were actively used in the commission of a major federal kidnapping plot,

the international banking authorities cooperated instantly,

locking him completely out of his stolen wealth."

A massive,

heavy wave of pure,

vindictive relief washed completely over me,

knowing that his precious,

stolen millions were absolutely useless to him now,

knowing that he was sitting in a cold,

concrete cell with absolutely nothing to his lying name.

"The family court judge is aggressively fast-tracking the emergency custody hearing for tomorrow morning,"

Sarah added quickly,

shuffling the heavy papers into a neat,

organized pile.

"We are going to legally strip him of all parental rights permanently,

we are going to secure a lifetime restraining order for both you and Hannah,

and we are going to make sure he pays every single dime of your extensive legal fees from his remaining,

frozen assets."

I stood up slowly from the plush chair,

feeling stronger,

feeling significantly more empowered than I had felt in many long,

miserable years.

The absolute worst part of my life was finally over,

the terrifying monster was completely disarmed,

defanged,

and trapped firmly in a cage of his own incredibly stupid making.

"I want him to completely lose everything,"

I stated firmly,

my voice completely steady,

completely devoid of any lingering,

pathetic fear.

"I want him to sit in that tiny prison cell for the next twenty-five years,

and I want him to fully realize that he lost his beautiful family because he was too incredibly selfish to simply love us properly."

Sarah nodded her head in deep,

respectful agreement,

extending her hand confidently across the large wooden table.

"That is exactly what we are going to do,

my friend,"

she promised fiercely,

shaking my hand with a strong,

May you like

iron grip.

"We are going to make him completely invisible."
