Chapter 18 - The Final Verdict and the Slamming of the Iron Cell

The twelve exhausted members of the official jury had been deliberating quietly behind a heavy,
locked wooden door for less than two short,
stressful hours.
I sat anxiously in the cold,
sterile hallway outside the main courtroom,
holding a small,
paper cup of terrible,
lukewarm coffee in my trembling hands,
staring blankly at the ugly,
checkered pattern of the linoleum floor.
Sarah Hastings sat quietly right next to me,
reading a thick legal brief,
projecting an aura of total,
unwavering confidence that helped keep my racing,
anxious mind from spiraling completely out of control.
"They are coming back exceedingly fast,"
Sarah whispered softly,
closing her thick folder and placing a warm,
comforting hand gently on my tense shoulder.
"A rapid verdict in a highly complex kidnapping and attempted murder case almost always heavily favors the absolute truth,
they definitely saw directly through his pathetic,
angry outburst on the stand."
Suddenly,
the heavy wooden doors swung open,
and the stern bailiff stepped out into the quiet hallway,
announcing loudly that the jury had officially reached a complete,
unanimous decision.
We walked quickly back into the massive courtroom,
taking our assigned seats as the heavy,
oppressive tension returned instantly to the thick,
stale air.
Aaron was brought back into the room a few moments later,
looking incredibly pale,
his previous angry arrogance completely replaced by a stark,
terrifying realization that his entire,
privileged life was actually about to end permanently.
The stern judge entered the silent room,
his black robes flowing heavily around his tall frame,
taking his high seat and looking completely,
utterly disgusted as he stared directly down at the pathetic man sitting at the defense table.
"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict,"
the judge asked formally,
his deep,
booming voice echoing powerfully against the high,
vaulted ceiling.
"We have,
Your Honor,"
the jury foreperson replied confidently,
standing up slowly and handing a small,
folded piece of white paper to the waiting bailiff,
who carried it carefully to the judge.
The judge unfolded the crisp paper,
reading the printed words silently,
his face remaining completely impassive,
giving absolutely nothing away before he finally cleared his throat loudly.
"On the incredibly serious charge of aggravated kidnapping of a minor across state lines,
we find the defendant completely,
undeniably guilty,"
the judge read clearly,
the heavy words slamming into Aaron like a massive,
physical punch to the stomach.
"On the serious charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,
we find the defendant guilty,
on the charge of extreme financial fraud and international embezzlement,
we find the defendant guilty."
The heavy list of serious,
devastating convictions went on and on,
every single guilty verdict acting exactly like another massive,
iron nail being hammered forcefully into the tight lid of his metaphorical coffin.
Aaron slumped heavily forward in his wooden chair,
his face completely buried in his chained,
shaking hands,
the absolute,
crushing reality of his long,
miserable future finally destroying his massive ego completely.
"Aaron Thomas,"
the judge said coldly,
setting the paper down and glaring fiercely at the broken man,
"you are a highly manipulative,
incredibly dangerous individual who used your own precious child as a mere pawn in a sick,
twisted game of domestic revenge."
The courtroom was so incredibly quiet that I could actually hear the rapid,
frantic beating of my own excited heart as I waited for the final,
ultimate sentence to be delivered.
"I am officially sentencing you to a total of twenty-five consecutive years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary,
with absolutely no possibility of early parole,
and I am officially granting a permanent,
lifetime restraining order forbidding you from ever contacting your ex-wife or your daughter again."
The heavy wooden gavel slammed down with a massive,
deafening crack,
the loud sound echoing beautifully like a victorious,
triumphant gunshot marking the absolute end of our long,
terrible war.
I let out a loud,
shaky sob of pure,
unadulterated relief,
burying my crying face completely in my trembling hands,
feeling the heavy,
suffocating weight of the last ten years completely lift off my tired shoulders.
The heavy bailiffs pulled Aaron roughly to his feet,
dragging his completely limp,
defeated body aggressively toward the heavy side door,
his metal chains clinking loudly,
singing a beautiful,
metallic song of absolute justice.
He turned his head one last,
desperate time to look at me,
but I simply stared right through his pathetic,
ruined face,
May you like
refusing absolutely to give him any more of my precious energy,
watching coldly as the heavy iron door slammed permanently shut behind him.
